King Melchiorre

Hear of the sacrifice made in your name by Melchiorre the brave king!
Melchiorre the Brave by Eulalia fom Serra
Melchiorre dolo Cando was the fifteenth monarch of the Kingdom of Litticala, who reigned from 147-164 GE. He is regarded as one of the most beloved figures in the Kingdom's history, and is remembered for his role in defending his subjects during the Siege of Coromare. He is frequently referred to as "Melchiorre the Brave", after the epic poem written by Eulalia fom Serra (138GE-208GE).

Early Life

Melchiorre was born on 6 Long Moon, 122 GE during the reign of his father, King Leonardo dolo Cando I. His mother, Sofia dolo Mireu, was the daughter of a noble house in Coromare. He was named for the light of the heavens, in traditional Celestialist fashion.   As the only heir to the Calan throne, Melchiorre married immediately upon coming of age in 142 GE, on the advice of the royal councilors. His wife, Lucetta dolo Baia, was a bright young woman from a noble family that owned the shipyards north of Coromare. While all hoped that the young couple would have many children to fill out the dwindling line of succession, Lucetta suffered several miscarriages. Their first and only surviving child, Nicolau dolo Cando II, was born in 145 GE.

Reign

Melchiorre ascended the throne in 147 GE, upon his father's death. His reign was relatively peaceful and unremarkable until the start of the Naleedic-Calan War in 160 GE. The war

Death

In the fourth and final year of the Naleedic-Calan War, the capital city of Coromare came under siege. Many Coromarans had fled the city weeks prior for the safety of the southeastern provinces, but there were just as many who remained. Fearing for the lives of his people, Melchiorre urged his subjects to take shelter in the palace as the Naleedite army breached the city walls and seized control of the River Cando.   For four days, the Naleedite army assaulted the palace. Litticala suffered heavy losses as they awaited reinforcements from the south. On the dawn of the fifth day, Melchiorre bid his wife and son farewell, and took up his sword to join his soldiers in defending his people from the invading Naleedites. Moved by the sight of their king fighting by their side, the Calan army rallied and began to drive the enemy back.   Grievously wounded in battle, Melchiorre perished on the steps of the Palace on 34 River Moon, 164 GE.

Legacy

While he was not a noteworthy monarch in life, Melchiorre's death during the Siege of Coromare elevated him to the status of a hero. The tale of the sacrifice he made for his people was memorialized in art and poetry, and remains one of the most popular stories in the Kingdom to this day.
