The Sundering

During lunar eclipses the latent Lifeforce in buried corpses coalesces and reanimates the dead. During this time people fortify themselves into their home. The ghouls only come out at night and aren't organized in any way.
The horde eventually uses up all its energy and then the bodies are cremated.
