Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

The ancestors of the Saarelaiset first made their way to Kylmä Lika and Ongi'at over seven millennia ago. Gradually, these coastal hunter-gatherers added farming to their hunting, trapping, and fishing practices. By the beginning of the Age of Light, the Saarelaiset tribes were geographically divided, with those on Kylmä Lika beginning to take on the influences of the Rødsejl people, while those in on the smaller Ongi'at Isles still maintained strong ties with the seafaring tribes of the south.

Shared customary codes and values

With the rise of permanent agricultural settlements on Kylmä Lika, the Saarelaiset adopted a system of communal ownership and management of their natural resources. This system means that all of the fields, forests and pastures surrounding a Saarelaiset hamlet, are the property of the one or two dozen families that live adjacent to them. These families are solely responsible for the management of this land, but are entitled to the total yield of any agricultural practice conducted there.

Common Etiquette rules

The Saarelaiset are reserved and sparing with words, they take words and verbal promises very seriously, and rarely engage in small-talk.
