The Blue Velvet

The Blue Velvet is west of Rush street, in the heart of The Rack.   Always on the cutting edge of music and style trends, this club is popular with mortals and therefore also with vampires. Though no one knows who owns it, rumour is that it belongs to one of the Kindred.   Before becoming The Blue Velvet, the club went through several incarnations: a Prohibition Speakeasy, and Irish pub, a blue-collar tavern, and a gay bar. Then, in 1972, it was bought by an unidentified individual, rumoured to have made a great deal of under-the-table profit from the decline of the local steel industry. These allegedly ill-gotten gains financed the takeover of "Club Fantastica" and, after 3 months of closure and heavy refurbishment, the opening of The Blue Velvet.   The club boasts 4 separate bars, a huge dancefloor, and a VIP lounge that overlooks the entire club through a one-way mirror. The bartender and servers, all brought in from Los Angeles, have a perfect memory for every drink ever created. The waiting staff are tastefully dressed.   The Blue Velvet's popularity straddles all social strata and attracts Kindred and kine alike. On Fridays and Saturdays, the line for entry goes around the block. Even on other nights, the club is busy.   Kindred can skip the line by presenting themselves at the front; they also receive a pass for the VIP lounge. The doorman, Ian Gibson, has an unfailing ability to pick out the undead. He has also proven strangely immune to Domination, never answering any questions about this, or about his employer. He is definitely mortal, so how this works is still a mystery. An imposing physical specimen, he is the club's first line of defence against gatecrashers.   The dancefloor is always busy, right up until closing time. During the most popular nights, Thursday to Saturday, the best DJs in town play the top 100 for dancers. Sundays and Mondays are slower, with the music switching to progressive rock and heavy metal. Tuesdays and Wednesdays vary depending on the audience; jazz and country & western are often heard on these nights.   Only the best bands are invited to play at The Blue Velvet. Baby Chorus show up once every couple of months. Band leaders and agents all claim that Gibson is the one who deals with them, and they have never met the owner; likewise, the staff all receive their paychecks from Gibson and have never seen the owner.   No one among the Chicago Kindred has ever admitted to being the owner. Whoever they are, they are undoubtedly aware of the Vampiric goings-on and have done nothing to stop them; indeed the VIP status afforded to Kindred entering the club would seem to indicate they are favoured.
