The Twilight Woods

Paul Stewart; The Edge Chronicles book 5, Storm chaser
Whether it is the strange light, the mysterious storms that come out of nowhere or some other latent magical property it is thought that one cannot die within the woods despite suffering grave injury. As such the woods is a mecca to hermits who wish to contemplate the mysteries of the universe for ever, although none have returned from such contemplation.   The prospect of being unable to die may appeal to many, however within this woods you live a half life. While yes, a previously deadly wound won't kill you it means you will die as soon as you leave the woods.   This leads the many denizons to spend an eternity in solitude and contemplation, far from any loved ones and with no way to contact them.

Geography

The woods is so named for the way the light always looks like twilight, with a non existnet sun somehow just obsucred by the horizon despite being in the sunless underdark.   The ground is rocky but largely flat, covered in a think layer of sparkling burgundy dust.

Fauna & Flora

Massive Mushrooms, hundreds of meters tall make up this forest, their stalks a mauve with violet caps.   Few plants grow at ground level but those that do are tough and often spiny, leaching life from the great mushrooms.   Some plants have found that there is plenty of nutrients in meat and so evolved to be carnivourous. one such plant has great vines which latch into the heads of unsuspecting passers by, controlling thier actions to protect the plant from predators while their life is leeched away through the vines.

Natural Resources

This is the only known location of Stormphrax, a powerful opal esc stone found after the mysterious storms of the woods pass.
Scholars of the Hueford institute and University of Capital among countless others have sent investigations to this strange place, some hoping for a wealth of exotic flora and fauna, to find treasures that hold power over life and death, while others sought to elongate their career by spending an eternity in study.   Reviewing the Capital university archive would show that all such expeditions have ended in the entire team becoming MIA with no sign as to their exact fate except that they are somewhere in the great forest.   However, urban legend and myth tells of one who survived the ordeal; said to have been a Paige in service of an research expedition the young man somehow returned alive from the dreaded place. some say that upon returning to capital the university snapped him up and took him apart to find if he had developed a magical abnormality, others that he immediately bought the most expensive company he could find and shut himself away in the Tangled Kitty drinking himself to death within days. One old fisherman in the Shales swears the young man bought a boat of him, with a 100 yard stare and enough weapons to fit an army he sailed off back to the woods saying only that he would free them.
