Fun Facts

  • When Lucina's platoon was promoted to the Brotherhood of Bloods, they underwent a strenuous training regiment where the soldiers would practice blood magic on each other. During a combative exercise, Lucina was struck through the helmet with another soldier's crimson rite magic. Her right eye was damaged. She refused medical attention to hide her identity and tried to heal the eye herself. Because of this, she can only see shadows and light out of that eye.
  • Lucina’s childhood nickname was “Lu.” She used this as her first name while impersonating a man.
  • Lucina cut her hair short to enlist in the army, but started growing it out once she was given her own helmet to wear.
  • Lucina has a half-sister, Aolyn, and met her a couple of times while in the army.
  • Murie and Lucina had zero contact during Lucina’s initial training. After her one year training, she returned to her childhood home to see Murie. Lucina was in contact with her foster mother through letters and holiday visits. A distance grew between them as Lucina became hardened with battle and the secrets she was forced to keep.
  • After she left Wischlavia, Lucina kept a book of letters where she explained everything that happened while in the military and all her fears, her anger and sorrow. These letters were meant for Murie but were never sent. Lucina occasionally wrote a letter for Edelinne, but they were often crumpled and filled with ink blots.

Synopsis

Lucina was raised in Wischlavia by her mother, Murie Garren. Lucina and Murie lived a poor life; barely scraping by on the salary of a blacksmith. Lucina spent her time dodging through the streets with the other children stealing cookies and apples off of carts. She would spend time with her mother in the shop and tell her stories she made up.   Lucina loved Murie with all her heart, but when she got older she started questioning who her dad was. Murie told her a half truth; he was an unknown human who committed a crime and has never been seen again. Murie didn't want to tell her adopted daughter the truth.   When she turned 16, Lucina fantasized about joining the Lord’s Holy Army. She would creep through the streets to ogle at the men in shiny armor and impressive medals. Lucina knew that high ranking officers earned lots of money. She wanted that for her mom. When Lucina told her plan to join the army, Murie forbade it and laughed; women were not permitted to join the military. Murie’s greatest fear was losing Lucina.   On her 17th birthday, Murie sat Lucina down and told her the truth of her lineage; her mother was Queen Edelinne. Murie told Lucina everything; about the assault on her mother that led to her conception, about her childhood friendship and love for Edelinne, and how Murie accepted Lucina with open arms into her home. Murie told Lucina the reason for her mother leaving her; Lucina was half human, half elf, and her father was not the king. Lucina fell quiet and went to bed early that night.   The next morning, Murie was left with a note that read, “You’ll always be my mother, but I need to do this for you, for us and me. - Love, Lucina.” Murie ran out of the house looking for her daughter, but it was too late. Lucina had already cut her hair short, changed her name to Lou Garren and signed her life away to King Ceowulf's Royal Holy Army.   King Ceowulf, the reigning leader of Wischlavia, was a cruel man who’s indifference towards compassion and empathy drove him to be possessed by Bane, the god of tyrannical oppression, terror, and hate. King Ceowulf’s Royal Holy Army was a crusade against the surrounding feywild lands, kingdoms and cities in an attempt to gain more territory, resources and followers. Ceowulf would stop at nothing to gain success.
Lucina pushed herself through the year long bootcamp and graduated with high honors. After her first deployment to the Feywilds, she quickly became one of the best soldiers in her platoon. Lucina quickly rose through the enlisted ranks and studied to become an officer - all while successfully keeping her identity a secret. After her officer training was completed, she was stationed as a Lieutenant of the 189th Halberdier Infantry on the front lines.   The 189th Halberdier Infantry was a specialized group of polearm masters; about 30 men. They were one of the most successful platoons and ranked the highest in kills and territory taken.
Captain Garren in Uniform
King Ceowulf took great interest in Lucina’s platoon and established the 189th as a special ops troop: the Brotherhood of Bloods. Ceowulf granted this platoon blood magic to help them overcome enemies of all kinds. Lucina and her platoon learned how to track, idenitfy, and swiftly kill fey, fiends and the undead with rite blood magic. Lucina took advantage of this training and became unmatched on the battlefield, using her new blood powers to blaze through the battlefield. However, simple blood magic wasn't the final stage of Ceowulf’s plan.   About two years after the creation of the Brotherhood of Bloods, Lucina was promoted to Captain of the platoon. Lucina was excited; a promotion of this significance would allow her access into the castle and she would get to meet the Queen. The promotion ceremony was magnificent with the castle hall decked out in decoration. Ceowulf knighted her as captain and the Queen blessed her with a prayer and kiss to the helm. Lucina noticed the Queen stare at her with a curious look. For a moment, Lucina feared she would be realized but the moment disappeared as the ceremony continued.
After the formal promotion ceremony, a secondary ceremony commenced in the depths of the barracks where the Brotherhood of Bloods studied and practiced. Ceowulf himself presented the platoon with the key to the future; a syringe of swirling red liquid. Ceowulf ordered Lucina to kneel before him. He jerked her chin upward and injected the liquid into Lucina’s neck. He proceeded to do the same with the rest of the platoon. Lucina thrashed on the ground with sharp, hot pain before transforming into a lycanthrope wolf. Her phase flickered out and she turned back into her humanoid form. When she became half-elf again, her clothes were torn and her helmet lay on the ground before her feet. Her long white hair spilled out in front of her face. Her secret was out.   Lucina was thrown into prison for treason against the King, impersonation of a soldier and using the Lord’s resources against him. She was stripped of her title, weapons, and was left to be executed in the morning before the whole city. Lucina thought of her mother, Murie and how she would have to watch her adopted daughter die. She thought of her birth mother, the Queen, and wondered if she would recognize her or come to her aid.
Lucina in Werewolf Form
Lucina decided this wasn’t the end of her story. She waited for a guard to approach her cell and transformed into a wolf. She slashed his throat and stole the prison keys. She stole his armor, helmet and halberd. As a distraction she unlocked all the prison cells, letting every criminal run free. She laid low and slipped away into the darkness of night, leaving Wischlavia behind.   Lucina headed out into the world unprepared for what laid ahead. This wasn’t the last time Wischlavia would have her leave it’s walls. She vowed to earn, steal, cheat as much money as she could to rescue Murie from Wischlavia and never return.

People of Importance

Queen Edelinne - Birth Mother (Elf)

Edelinne is the Queen of Wischlavia, daughter of King Sigurd and Queen Evangeline. In her youth, Edelinne often slipped out of the castle to seek adventure beyond the stone walls. During one of these trips, she met Murie Garren, who quickly became her childhood best friend and later, her secret lover. Edelinne and Murie would sneak off to the hillsides together and spend their time swimming in the creek and laying out under the stars. However, Edelinne’s visits to Murie grew few and far between when she became of age due to her betrothal to Duke Ceowulf.   On the night of her engagement party, Edelinne was assaulted by an unknown human noble at the gala event. No one knew of the attack and Edelinne realized she had become pregnant out of wedlock. Fearing for her safety, she faked illness to remain in her quarters. When she was due to give birth, Edelinne slipped away from the castle one last time to visit Murie. Murie helped her deliver her daughter and vowed to keep the child safe and raise her as her own. The only thing Edelinne was able to give her daughter was her name.

Murie Garren - Foster Mother (Elf)

Murie is the secret former childhood best friend and lover of Queen Edelinne. When Queen Edelinne became pregnant out of wedlock, she sought refuge with Murie to deliver the child. Murie vowed to keep Lucina safe from the wrath of the King. Murie raised Lucina as her own and dreaded the day she’d have to tell her adoptive daughter the truth of her lineage.   Murie is a blacksmith for the lower end of the city. Her business is repairing fencing, horseshoes, wagon wheels and farm equipment. She would often use small scraps of metal to create puzzle games and knick knacks for Lucina. Murie was a great mother and worked hard to provide Lucina with the best she could. One of their favorite activities to do together was to climb the roof of their small house and watch the stars.

Aolyn - Half-Sibling (Elf)

Aolyn is the daughter of Queen Edelinne and King Ceowulf. She is two years younger than Lucina and was raised properly in the castle. Lucina knows who the princess is but isn’t aware of their relationship until Murie tells her.   Aolyn likes to hang around the soldier barracks near the castle and taunt the young soldiers. She is often described as stuck up and spoiled. Lucina tried to stay away from her, but she had a few run-ins with her.   The first time Lucina met the princess, Aolyn gaslight Lucina into killing an innocent begger in front of the castle gates. Other run-ins with the princess resulted in hazing. One time, Aolyn spilled coffee on Lucina’s head and helmet as she was bending over to fasten her armor. Lucina had to hurry away to take off her helmet in private to clean it.

King Ceowulf (Elf)

King Ceowulf is the ruler of the city-state Wischlavia. Ceowulf is a cruel man and inhibits the power of the god, Bane. Bane is the god of tyrannical oppression, terror, and hate. It is said that during times of opportune conquests, Bane would possess a noteworthy individual and force their body to take on a twisted and monstrous form with leathery black skin and powerful claws that could rend flesh and metal alike. Bane overtook Ceowulf’s body when he became King of Wischlavia.   For the last 25 years, Ceowulf has led a crusade against the Feywilds and kingdoms surrounding Wischlavia in hopes of overtaking more land and resources in the name of Bane. Not even his own Royal Army is immune to his cruelty. No one knows of the grip Bane has on Ceowulf's soul; the Queen only has her doubts.   King Ceowulf despises fey creatures and humans. He believes Elves are the superior race. After he became king, there was a mass exodus of humans and other races from Wischlavia due to prejudice. Only Elves and the occasional half-elf remain. King Ceowulf is known to use bats to spy on his soldiers to make sure they comply with his manifest.

Memories

It is a dreary and wet winter day in Wischlavia. You have just finished your morning routine and have eaten your breakfast, a watery turnip stew. A famine chokes the denizens of Wischlavia; last year's harvest was not nearly as bountiful as it needed to be, and as a newly recruited foot-soldier such as yourself, you are not entitled to the luxuries of taste and decadence. But you are lucky to even have food, for many of the peasants starve at this time. With a yawn and a stretch, you leave the soldier barracks and head towards your post at the gates of the castle walls.   Your body has not yet gotten used to the day-to-day routine of being a soldier, and in your stupor, you don't notice the figure approaching you until they hail you.   "Wow you look tired, what's wrong...didn't get enough sleep?"   You turn and freeze at the sight of Princess Aolyn. You've heard from the other soldiers that it is best to stay away from her, she's known to taunt fresh recruits like you.   "Do you know who I am?"   “Of course, princess,” you say stiffly.   "Oh? That's a good start for you, how about this, what do you know about me? Heard any rumors or...talk in the barracks?"   You explain to the princess that you’ve heard of her exploits with the other soldiers. She poured honey into their armor, flirted ruthlessly with them, and taunted them with her father’s power. Princess Aolyn was someone the soldiers made a point to avoid… and if someone got in her way it was best to keep low and obey.   "Look, it's obvious to me that I could really make your life miserable, and honestly... I'd love to! But instead, I have something I want you to do. So, listening? Good. You see, mother has been feeding the peasants and now they keep swarming the gates looking for food and honestly it's so fucking depressing seeing those crowds of beggars. Not a shred of dignity, they should stop being so lazy and get a job. Since mother won't do anything about it, I will. I want you to make them stop swarming the gates for good."   “I’m not sure if I should-” you say. You aren't stationed at the front gates today. But the princess cuts you off.   "I'll give you bonus points if you kill one of them and make a show of it."   You hesitantly march over to the front gates of the castle grounds with the princess on your heels. There, a large crowd of lower-class citizens surrounds the gates. The other military guards stand silently in front of the gates, not engaging with the commoners, but not permitting them entry. You push your way to the front of the crowd to stand in between the suffocating hoard and the front gates.   You raise your hand in confidence borrowed from the last shred of pride you have. “Please, disperse. The Queen is not seeing anyone today.”   The crowd grows rowdier. You feel the burning stare of the princess through your helmet. A raggedly dressed woman approaches you to plead for kindness and mercy. These are the same people you grew up alongside. Your mind's eye flashes to your adopted mother. Once again you beg for the woman to just listen.   “I said back! Vacate the area immediately!”   The crowd pushes forward. Your armor weighs on your shoulders as you raise your halberd in a warning stance. Blood rushes to your ears and the crowd’s rowdiness builds. The princess’s gaze burns a hole through your resolve. You lunge forward with your halberd pointed out in front of you.   “I said GET BACK!”   The sound of piercing flesh penetrates your ears. Then a scream. The princess is pleased.   "You know, with obedience like that, I'll see about getting you a promotion, It'd be a waste to just have you guard gates. I have a feeling you're different from the others."
