Mikaili

Mikaili , Like most of the young boys from his village in the Ethiopian highlands, dreamed of a future as a Coptic priest. Those plans were dashed when the ship he sailed on with his mentor was raided by pirates and he was taken captive. Mikaili was forced to replace the pirate ship’s navigator who had been killed in the raid. He spent the next five years learning navigation and partaking in incidents that withered his moral fiber. When he finally escaped the pirates he felt unworthy of his earlier calling. For a time he made a living as a navigator but eventually gave up the sea as well, until a very successful and very persuasive merchant from Mombasa talked him into going to sea once again. Mikaili is easily irritated and fussy man whose knowledge of the Indian Ocean and further is unparalleled. He tolerates Changa’s teasing and is reluctant to admit his knowledge unless given no choice. He and Changa have a friendship that’s filled with insults and arguments but genuine just the same.
