Golem

Golems are sentient elementals primarily made out of minerals, metals (raw and/or chiseled/molten in shape) and the influence of magic that keeps them alive and in rare cases able to shapeshift.   To grant them life, mages used to enchant them with the spirits of deceased people, preferably the spirits of kings and lords for their intelligence, wisdom and combat training and experience. Then there are spirits of soldiers and knights being used. The reason why not many golems with the spirits of mages were manifested is because those are harder to control if the living mage wants to control the golems, but since golems were forbidden as much as bringing them to life and use them as slaves, many golems were free and fled from any civilization to establish their own hidden settlements. No one knows for sure where they went but some suspect that they live in the underground as far distance neighbors of the dwarves. A few golems however are still resting in the ancient pyramids, protected by the ancient and deadly traps and riddles.
