Malope Pendula

The Malope pendula or also known as ‘sea flower’ is a medium-sized vine plant. It is dark green-blue in color along the vine with the leaves matching the Gleaming Teal Abyss in color. The leaves are square and have huge blossoms. Which range in color from pink to deep red for the male flowers, and blue to rich purple for the female blossoms. It blooms once a year for only a week. After that week a large light seed pod replaces the female flowers. Once the pods appear you have only three days to harvest them before they sink and start new plants. Because of this harvest time is important to the Mukas people. This plant grows in only one place in all of Central Haven, the Mukas islands. Any attempts to cultivate it elsewhere have failed. The plants have been said to die even before they pass the Mukas islands. They grow on the sides of the islands that face the Gleaming Teal Abyss. They are found in the rocky shallows that separate oceans between normal and the Gleaming Teal Abyss in this area. To be able to navigate through these waters takes a lot of skill and many years of training to master. Many young and reckless sailors have tried and died trying.   Malope pendula is used in several different things. The whole plant is edible. The seed pods are good in medicine. The flowers when treated correctly are a beautiful dye. The leaves are dried and used as a herb. The vines are gathered and made into one of the strongest ropes known. The dye, herb, and rope are all highly sought after from all over Central Haven. The plant is also a part of a rite of passage.   The week of harvest is the busiest two-week period of the year. The sailor harvesters are looking at which areas to harvest to make sure that they do not over-harvest and leave nothing for the future. On-land prep for processing of the different parts of the Malope pendula is taken care of. Also the gathering of the Aucuba abies. Once it has been collected it is dried in preparation to be scattered across the Malope pendula fields after the week of harvest has been completed.
