Whirlpool Spirit

Storm spirits that spin rapidly to form whirlpools to draw in sustenance. Found in the great sea, especially along the northern coast and near the South Gate.   Like most spirits, these are incredibly simple creatures. Whirlpool spirits' only instincts are to spin and absorb energy from food that reaches them, antlions of the sea. They also act as lightning rods, absorbing the electrical energy for sustenance, often acting as funnels for Storm Gems as a result.   In later times, these spirits were used to construct mechanisms such as motors, lathes, and angle grinders by seafaring civilizations. A small whirlpool spirit with an ignium shard placed at its mouth could spin for days on end. The main limiting factor being that they require constant sustenance and have no 'off switch', winking out if not fed for long enough (typically 'starving' after a few days). This made stockpiling them prohibitively expensive, and dragging them from the seas in which they naturally sustain themselves generally is an effort in itself (seeing as one basically has to sail into a whirlpool).   Higher end Epacsi forges tended to make use of these spirits extensively to maximize productivity, their profit margins high enough to justify the cost of importation despite being possibly the furthest point on the continent from the spirits' natural habitats.
