Bereavement

A savage looking single-edged sword that bleeds murderous intent, Bereavement is a strange relic from ages past. The exact origin of the weapon is not recorded, but its presence in treasuries and across battlefields over the ages is known. Long speculated to have a specfic requirement to utilize the unknown enchantment that rests on it, the true nature of it has remained unknown for hundreds of years.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Bereavement is the vessel for a ferocious spirit that hungers for death, feeding on the negative emotions like terror and grief surrounding it, but only satisfied when it comes from sapient species. It only responds to people who have killed before and truly speaks when they kill someone with the sword for the first time. Once its wielder is considered worthy, it whispers to be drawn at every occasion. The weapon waits for the wielder's most vulnerable and weakest moments, offering a great deal of power in exchange for the user's lifespan. The wielder must freely give up their life, as the sword cannot be fooled. Since it can feel and read the emotions of those around, it knows when someone is truly at the end of their rope and willingly sacrificing their life. To have the positive regard of the sword, is to have it wish for your death as well.

History

Created by one completely lost to madness and grief, Bereavement was one of the Shards of Grief created before the Annihilation. Whoever its creator was, they were so consumed with malice and hatred for the wraiths that whatever they did to make the sword resulted in a weapon so lethal, that it could kill its wielder. Its use against the wraiths remains unknown, but it clearly survived the Annihilation by being outside the reach of its devastation. In the ruined new world, it passed from one hand, to another. From warriors to warlords eager to spill blood themselves, leaving bodies in its wake the whole time.

Significance

A relic from before the Annihilation, it also saw use during the Time of Wolves and more famously in the aftermath of the The Traitor's War. Zachi-el was acknowledged as the best choice to continue using the weapon after surrendering to the Attorians and their allies. Zachi-el with the strange sword carrying out the prince's orders became a much talked about sight.
