The Caverns
"On all sides we are protected by the stone. Let it guide where to go, but do not let it suffocate you."
Geography
As the cave systems are the only part of the world that is known it is impossible to know how big the world really is. Every year more and more is dug out to make room for the ever growing civilizations, but they've yet to reach a surface. If there even is a surface.
The caves are a maze through the ground, spreading out over a vast area, and in several levels. There are caves that host huge lakes and forests, tunnels that are made from the rivers making their way through the stone, and of course the caves that make up the settlements and cities.
Ecosystem
The climate does not vary as much as it would on the surface. Temperatures do not shift over the year, but vary in different parts of the world, there are places where lava has been discovered, while others keep cool, although there is yet to be found a place that goes below 0 degrees.
Fauna & Flora
There are a lot of different biomes in different parts of the system, and since the tunnels are the only way to get between places species have spread a bit unusually in some places. Some trees are prevalent along certain tunnels for a long stretch of space, while being completely absent in places way closer if they were able to go through the rock.
It is still not known how far the cave system actually reaches. Every year new caves and tunnels are unearthed as the people dig out new areas in their hunt for expansion and resources. With every new area that opens up, new species of plants and animals are discovered, which means that exotic traders can make a fortune bringing in new species to the capitals for sale.
