Gnome

An Elder Race Of Tiny Forest Folk

This Elder Race is known for its extremely small stature, extremely high intelligence, and predilection for making extremely strange gadgets.   Gnomes tend to be highly inventive, as well as highly competitive. This is reflected especially in the building of gnomish houses, where the majority of construction is dedicated to elaborate devices for all manner of purposes from transportation to defense to cooking. It is customary in gnomish communities to engage in an annual city-wide competition to see which neighborhood can manufacture the most outlandish device. Everyone in the community is encouraged to participate, which in turn fuels scientific innovation in fascinating ways.   With their quick minds and nimble fingers, and their ability to fit into small spaces, gnomes are as well suited to thievery as they are to magic, and many gnomes dabble in a bit of both. It is not uncommon to find broken gnomish lockbreakers laying around in dungeons (magichanical devices fueled by water magic, created to automatically unlock any lock, notorious for breaking after only a few uses), a testament to the gnome's strange combination of natural gifts.
