DescriptionPeasants make up the lowest economic class within any settlement, and often make up the majority of the population. Peasants in different settlements are not an interconnected group, but peasants of the same settlement are strongly linked by their economic status. While I have not the time to personally observe the peasant class within every major settlement, I decided that they deserved an entry, if not solely for the fact that they make up most of the human population.
Peasants are usually easily identifiable by their use of poorly kept, ragged clothes and often dirty hands. They most frequently perform manual labor as their commitment to the settlement in which they reside. Exhaustion is a common affliction among this class, as long days of intensive labor are common and sometimes enforced by a settlement. While fit and strong enough to survive in the harsh conditions of Caligone, peasants are all usually lacking in some way in comparison to lords or other higher class persons, which is what keeps them in their position. Occasionally, one is born among them with the strength or magical prowess to potentially climb out of their class. Though I have seen many cases where such people are quelched by their superiors, made to venture outside of the settlement for pointless tasks, or perform unimpressive labor such that their skills are never noticed or allowed to develop. This practice seems to be born from a fear of being forced out of their own position by the new, stronger blood. Many settlements limit the sizes of their mechant and lord classes to make sure there are enough workers to provide for the settlement, so this is not a fabricated concern.
Peasants within a given settlement are often a tightly knit group. In spite of large populations, they largely seem familiar with each other and are much more open to assisting others of their own than higher economic sectors (though this is likely out of necessity). As such, the largest quantity of collaborative work can be found from them, whether that be new inventions or practices. Warlords and arcane masters are much too inclined by ego to let their works be accredited to anyone but themselves.
