Childhood was very normal, if a little posh. Technically I'm old money because my family owns the Hanson paper company. But I don't let that define me, because my life was a struggle after the accident. When I was a kid at our Florida holiday home, a hurricane and flood that came with it hit our place hard. We thought we were high enough, but the waters took my parents, almost took me too. It was days sitting on that roof before the coast guard found me. It was purely luck too, dad never liked neighbors and our place was far away from any of the suburbs. When I got home, everything changed. I was now living with my aunt Harry, her kids, and her ever changing collection of boyfriends. She wasn't too into being in my life, and the feeling was mutual. Because by the time all the legal guardian bullshit was handled, I knew what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I was going to make sure I'd never get caught by surprise by a disaster ever again.
At first it was very basic stuff. Every wing of the house had an emergency first aid kit and some non perishable food. I started training my mind and body. I took up parkour and boxing to get into peak physical performance. Then I started studying up on ways to survive anything, from tornadoes to zombies. Even on the days when auntie dearest dragged me into a therapist's office, I still worked my ass off to get my body toned and ready for anything thrown my way.
When I started getting my inheritance money, that's when I started to really expand on my plans. First were the bunkers. Had to fight tooth and nail for it, but the first one I ever set up was in my Aunt Harry's backyard. I live with her, so it only made sense. Then when my home base was set up, I started settling up bunkers everywhere as my way of contributing to the good ole U S of A. Ever had to stay in a bunker for a disaster in the past 5 or so years? It was probably a Hanson brand bunker. All my bunkers, from the public ones, to my own personal ones are state of the art, capable of surviving a long, long time.
With all that work into prepping, eventually I started holding seminars on preparing for the worse, so that even the marshmellowiest of dudes can survive out in the wild. It was also a great way of getting guys active and their minds sharp. My awesome seminars are probably what caught the recruiters in the first place. I may not have what my family call a ‘real job,’ but that’s as close to one as I’ll ever need.
