Vampirism

"As soon as Venri had completely cleared the boundaries of my realm, he dropped to his knees in pain. I witnessed his ghostly form take on a solid aspect. The shape of his body became encased in pure white flesh, marbled with the blue of blood vessels. When his eyes formed, they were a dark silver but had a red sheen when seen in a certain light. Black hair sprang from his head and grew to about his shoulders. Nails and teeth grew in last; his eye-teeth were those of a predator. He had the shape of a mortal, but he didn’t match any of the currently known races, being the only one of his line."

Transmission & Vectors

This condition is transmitted through the blood of an existing Veneeri. All known incidents were from oral transmission.

Causes

For someone to be afflicted, they must have lost enough blood to be unable to survive the loss. Then they must ingest the blood of a Veneeri, willingly or otherwise.

Symptoms

First, the person inflicted with the condition goes experiences a lot of pain, primarily in the heart and veins/arteries. Then the person's skin goes pale and the pupils of their eyes turn silver in color, with a reflective red sheen. Their eyeteeth grow much longer and sharper. After the conversion, the progress of their aging is stopped.   Afterwards, the new Veneeri is then sensitive to sunlight, which burns the skin, and can only get nourishment from mortal blood. Without taking nourishment, the Veneeri will become increasingly weak and experience a strong, gnawing pain.

Treatment

The condition cannot be reversed, only managed. It is advised that Veneeri keep themselves well fed to avoid going into a feeding frenzy or wasting away. It is also advised they stay out of the sun.

Prognosis

The condition has the effect of granting the Veneeri an extended lifespan. When Veneeri are taught how to keep themselves well fed and safe from the sun, they have the potential to live a very long time.

Affected Groups

It is the opinion of most experts that the Veneeri tend to choose those who are past the age of puberty, but before an age of infirmity. Generally they choose people who are attractive to them somehow, physically or by personality. However, mistakes are known to have happened.

Hosts & Carriers

Only the Veneeri themselves carry this.

Prevention

Generally, if one avoids the Veneeri, there's little chance of catching the condition. Fortunately, most Veneeri can be reasoned with. It is said that asking nicely can go a long way.   For those who are more concerned that they might get this condition, staying near a temple of Nelin is a good start, as the Veneeri can't enter his temples.

Epidemiology

Most Veneeri are cautious, and it's not likely an epidemic will occur. Though it would be possible for many people to die from Veneeri attacks, there is some speculation that each individual Veneeri can only created a limited number of their own. This seems to be a natural prevention against epidemics.

History

The first recorded case of the condition was when the first mortal ever born crossed the boarder between the Realm of Death and the Realm of the Living. The reason for this is rather uncertain. The first Veneeri, Venri, is fairly well known to most who have studied their Religious History.

Cultural Reception

Opinions on the Veneeri are rather diverse. To followers of Mynoris and Dyris they are practically sacred beings. To followers of Nelin they are anathema. Otherwise, the opinions are based very much on an individual's exposure to the myths surrounding the Veneeri, or encounters with actual Veneeri.
