Circular Poems
True Circular
A true circular poem contains twelve syllables, and is formatted as follows:
1st line: 1 syllable
2nd line: 2 syllables
3rd line: 3 syllables
4th line: 3 syllables
5th line: 2 syllables
6th line: 1 syllable
Example:
Flow
River
Of ash and
Burned, sooty
Embers,
Flow.
Large Circular
A large circular poem is formatted so that, rather than being syllables, the counts represent stressed syllables; this allows for longer poems. The format is as follows:
1st line: 1 stressed syllable
2nd line: 2 stressed syllables
3rd line: 3 stressed syllables
4th line: 3 stressed syllables
5th line: 2 stressed syllables
6th line: 1 stressed syllable
Example:
Once
There was a young
Little boy who knew
Naught about the world
Yet he's who we
remember.
Note how the order of the stressed and unstressed syllables changes between lines two and three, then back again from lines four to five.
Cyclical Poems
True Cyclical
A true cyclical poem contains eight syllables, and is formatted as follows:
1st line: 1 syllable
2nd line: 3 syllables
3rd line: 3 syllables
4th line: 1 syllables
Example:
Love:
Full of hope,
Happiness,
Truth.
Large Cyclical
A large cyclical poem is formatted so that, rather than being syllables, the counts represent stressed syllables; this allows for longer poems. The format is as follows:
1st line: 1 stressed syllable
2nd line: 3 stressed syllables
3rd line: 3 stressed syllables
4th line: 1 stressed syllable
Example:
Dimmèd
Lights of sky above;
Guardians of us-
Thankful.
The order of stressed and unstressed syllables doesn’t matter in a large cyclical poem.
