Session 16

This city is gorgeous. If there wasn’t doom biting at our heels, I would be tempted to try to build a life here.   But, we’re on a mission. Turid will be at the Baroness Inn once we have her payment. I sure hope we can actually pay her since she’s been so helpful. And I wouldn’t want her daughter mad at us, considering what she’s capable of.   We heard bells tolling as we entered the city. Great start. The king died in his sleep weeks ago, and there was a somber procession in the street today. The body had gems over its eyes as it passed; I had never considered that gems were sometimes used that way. With all the trouble we get ourselves into, I may need to find some corpse-worthy adornments for us soon.   While we were standing around for the procession, a boy tried to run off with a portion of my coins. Poor choice of person to rob from: Kara quickly nabbed him, and we made him return the money and explain himself. He said there was a creepy pale lady with a nightmare horse in the city guard that hunts and eats orphans like him. Not sure if I believe him, but either way I pray Torm will take care of him and guide him towards a better life.   We let the boy go and went on our way. In front of an inn, a sketchy-looking group grabbed my friends’ attention. We pursued them, and as we ran it became clearer that they were crew from the ship that had captured my friends. We chased them down an alley.   It was a trap. We fought and held nothing back. Well, the greenie was taking an… unconventional approach, by trying to lurk in the shadows. I can’t blame her: I’d be pretty embarrassed to be seen with the awful makeup she had on. Actually, no, we could have used her in the fray. This fight brought a lot of surprises: there was sudden darkness, weird bear noises, Kara had an ice arm, I summoned my spiritual weapon for the first time. It was intense, but we eventually took down their leader. We were still working on the lackeys when the town guard showed up. One lackey got away. Ugh. I really don’t want any more problems with these guys.   The guard lady the thief had described was there. I didn’t get a super evil feeling about her, but I’m not sure she’s normal either. We were arrested. We got chained up to a wall. While I understand that the guard are just doing what they’re meant to, I hate that I’m doing the right thing and being treated like this. I am doing the right thing, right?   We couldn’t talk, even if we yelled. Some kind of preventative magic, no doubt. But that’s nothing compared to what we endured that night. Would have been nice to know we were locked in with a WEREWOLF. I count myself lucky to be alive.
