Sub-Machine Guns

The rifle was too long and unwieldy in close combat, especially in the trench warfare of the First World War. Machine guns could spray a trench but could not be carried easily. Something else was needed that was no long like a rifle, portable like a pistol, and could spray and area with automatic fire. Thus the sub-machine gun was spawned from the need for a light weight assault weapon.

Germany lead the way in sub-machine gun design prior to and during World War Two, with the development of the MP18 in 1918. A design that helped define the ground rules for future sub-machine guns, with the use of the blow-back principle and the 9mm parabellum pistol round.

But Germany was not alone in the field of sub-machine gun development, the British and Americans followed quickly behind with weapons such as the Sten, Grease Gun, and the ever-famous Thompson.
