Gods in Bavelion Part 2: Vecna and The 10

Word of the Atrocities of Vecna would soon reach the ear of the gods of the mountain and the Garden. All would once again turn to the Council of Moralin and Annam, the two both puzzled on how to proceed. Each and every day Vecna claimed more and power from the gods whom he had slain, and the idea of a godless world began to attract many of those who saw the gods as unworthy of their power. However, to attack them up front would be unwise, countless more death and destruction would be spawned and the enemies of the gods such as the nine hells, the court of Kroll and the elder evils of passed would take the opportunity of their weakness as their advantage.   However, a third option soon presented itself. 10 human adventurers came to the mountain uninvited, but the gods of the Mountain wished to hear their proposal, much to the dismay of the gods of the Garden. The 10 told the gods they had a way to take the power the whispered one had gathered without need for up front confrontation. The Ten proposed that they would take the power that the Lich had gathered and bestow it between themselves, allowing them to take the mantles that had been stolen. There was much debate among the gods if it was wise to allow humanoids to be bestowed the power of a god without first walking the path of one. The path was first intended as a set of trials that would deem the mortal worthy of becoming such a powerful being.   However as their options for dealing with Vecna continued to dwindle it as well and the amount of power Vecna would garner would continue to grow, the gods of the Garden and Mountain agreed to allow the 10 mages to carry out their plan. The ten conducted a great many ancient rituals upon themselves, as they descended into the capital of Vecnas new empire.   What exactly transpired within those stone walls is unknown, but what little is known is this. The battle would extend into days, and then weeks. Vecna tore through the spells of the 10, until one among the ten known as Verve spoke allowed a secret only she had learned. That the final wish of the God Vecna had loved had not been for him to walk her path, but before she was slain she could see the monster her love would become. And her final wish was for him to be slain. Following this revelation Kas was convinced by his Blade that now was his chance to supplant vecna and the two engaged in a duel of scale godlike power, as sparks of radiant and necrotic flames lit up the entire room, The Sword of Kas sought the heart of Vecna and pierced it like an arrow of steel, causing the Lich to erupt into an explosion that would destroy the two in equal measure, leaving behind only a Blade and the hand and eye that were struck from Vecna during the duel.   At last the 10 would emerge the victor, but forever changed by the battle, as they had each lost something of themselves in order to take in the power of Vecna. Vecna had been defeated but his phylactery had remained secure beyond the reach of any, and thus before long a diminished Vecna would return to life not as a god, but as a lich. Now the ten each held a piece of the gods that Vecna had slain within them, and they themselves now possessed godlike abilities. These abilities were divided into the schools of the schools of magic.   The 10 were known as
  • Abjuration/ Ancestors of the Mark of Warding and Sentinel
  • Artifice/ Ancestors of the Mark of Making
  • Conjuration/ Ancestors of the Mark of Passage
  • Divination/ Ancestors of the Mark of Finding and Detection
  • Enchantment/ Ancestor of the Mark of Hospitality and Scribing
  • Evocation/ Ancestor of the Mark of Healing and Storm
  • Illusion/ Ancestor of the Mark of Shadow
  • Necromancy/ Ancestor of the Mark of Death
  • Transmutation/ Ancestor of the Mark of the Mutant
  • The Green/ Ancestor of the mark of Handling
  • The names of the ten were irrelevant after their transformation, and for years afterwards the nine existed as a sort of magical presence that would choose to inhabit there descendants. These descendents would later go on form and split into the 14 Marked Houses, sometimes named the Dragonmark as their magic was similar to that of the innate magical being of a dragon.   However, the creation of the 10 would have an unforeseen effect on Bavelion. As the Ten had not walked the path to become gods themselves, they were still mortal men. This fundamentally altered not only the rules put in place by the Gods that defined their power, but it also meant that any kind of creature could access a new kind of magic known as Arcana. This lead to the Mysterium era, and the end of the Golden age of Bavelion, as before long the power of the Necromancer of the 10 would go beyond his peers and would begin a reign of terror that bring the world into a state of peril that would rival even the mind flayer crisis, and would cause the 10 to become 9.
