Player-Accessible Languages

Introduction

There are many languages used on Baumb, and rather than making a separate article for each, I am making a combined page for all languages accessible to players.   NOTE:   Common is the common language of superterranean prime material humanoid countries.   Undercommon is the common language of subterranean humanoid countries.   Sylvan is the common language of countries in the Feywild.   Draconic is the common language of Beastfolk countries.

The First Language

Primordial

Historians and archeologists have found that the earliest record of language is Primordial. Primordial has similarities to Common, Dwarven, and Elven (and thus Gnomish, Orc, Halfling, etc) and is theorized to be the root of these languages. Giants speak primordial in this setting rather than Giant, to simplify things a bit.

The Major Salam Languages

Salam is a word beastfolk use to describe more humanlike races. Beastfolk (Dragonborn, Tabaxi, Aarakocra, etc) have their own language separate from the development of Salam races. The historical existence of Common, Dwarven, and Elven is known, but it is unclear when usage of these languages started, or if there were any other old languages used at this time.

Common

Common is the traditional tongue of humans. In ancient times, it might have been known as Human or Humanish, but it was an easy to learn language that quickly broke down the language barriers and united the world

Elven

Like the humans, elves also had their own language. In canon, it is a fluid language spoken in a semi-hypnotic cadence.

Dwarven

Dwarves had their own language as well. In canon, it is a rough language spoken in a deeper voice than common, with limited vowel sounds.

Derived Languages

The remainder of humanoid languages are written in Common (Latin), Elven (Greek), or Dwarven (Cyrillic) script. There is recorded history of when these languages were made, but it isn't common knowledge as much as facts one would find in researching, as that fact has no apparent common use.

Dwarven Script

Historically, dwarves have been the first to explore new lands, and as such they used their written alphabets to write down oral languages, and thus the languages of other races are written in Dwarven Script.

Orc

In canon, Orc has shorter words and a lot of gestures are used when speaking.

Gnomish

In canon, many Gnomish words have silly-sounding syllables and most phrases are spoken in rhyming couplets.

Goblin

In canon, Goblin is spoken in a higher pitch and more quickly than most other languages.

Elven Script

Rather than exploring lands with other races, Elves broke the boundaries of reality itself and discovered new worlds parallel to the already known lands.

Sylvan

Sylvan, the language of the fey, is common in the Feywild and written in Elven script. In canon, Sylvan is spoken in a more breathy tone, almost whispering.

Undercommon

Undercommon, the language of the Drow, is common in the Underdark and written in Elven script. In canon, Undercommon has a lot of "oo" sounds and is spoken in the cadence of a joke.

Common Script

Halfling

Historically, Halflings gravitated to Humans and integrated Common into their own language. In canon, Halfling is very casual and uses a lot of contractions and shorter words.

Beastfolk

Separate from the touch of Salam races for many years, Dragons, Kobolds, and several animal-based races flourished. As their "Common," they used the language of dragons as well as languages specific to each race.

Draconic

Draconic is a language used by dragons as well as dragonborn and was adopted by beastfolk as their common language. In canon, Draconic is spoken with growls and many consonants.

Animal-specific languages

These languages are race-specific for several animal-based and are all oral. Cawing, meowing, chittering, and hissing will be used to orally portray these languages.

Immortal Languages

Not many mortals know about the Immortals, besides the offspring of an Immortal with a mortal, or scholars trying to come into contact with these Immortals.

Abyssal

Abyssal is the native language of the Abyss and the demons living therein. Children of demonic heritage have a chance of knowing Abyssal. In canon, Abyssal is spoken with rolling "r"s and whispers.

Infernal

Infernal is the native language of Hell and the devils living therein, as well as Genies. Genasi, children of genie heritage, and true Tieflings, children of devilish heritage have a chance of knowing Infernal. Genies are not devils, but they do share a language. In canon, Infernal is spoken sounding as though the speaker is spitting at the end of the sentences, but the middle is smooth.

Celestial

Celestial is the native language of Heaven and the angels living therein. Aasimar, children of angelic heritage have a chance of knowing Celestial. Celestial is spoken as a drone.
