The Sundering

The Sundering was a cataclysmic event during which the seven great magi of Sari-Ifa pushed Svellbjargheim south into the frigid pole region. The spell, which was intended to destroy the land bridge between Sari-Ifa and Svellbjargheim, caused a famine in Svellbjargheim that caused millions of Svellbjarg to starve and flooded the southern coast of Sari-ifa for a decade before the water receded.

History

Back when Svellbjargheim laid north it was able to sustain more agriculture, which in turn helped the population to boom. The lands of Svellbjargheim become crowded, and many young man began seeking their fortunes up north in Sari-Ifa, leading their armies over the land bridge that existed between the two continents. These young man terrorized the Sari-Ifans, plundering and pillaging deep into the continent. When they came home they brought back stories, plunder, and sacrifices for the next Soulstice, inspiring more to follow in their wake.   After half a century of constant raiding a group of seven powerful magi, who each had lost something to the raiders, decided that enough was enough and prepared to do something about it. They prepared a ritual that would forever put an end to what they called the Svellbjarg Problem. Using the knowledge each of the seven magi had about their type of mana they created a spell simply known as the Sundering.   The seven magi made their way to a small outcropping, nowadays known as Ritual Cliff, from where they could overlook the landscape and keep an eye on the two main valley through which the Svellbjarg preferred to travel into Sari-Ifa. On Ritual Cliff they began casting their ritual. When they three quarter of the way done they saw an immense army appear. This army was lead by Erik the Lost, who at the time had raised the greatest host since the time of Ulfhild the Conqueror. Erik's army spotted the magi, and the began attacking their position. They rained down swarms of arrows upon the magi, who had to raise a wall of stone just to protect themselves. Two of the magi broke of from the rest to defend the group, and one of them, the magi of Necromantic Mana, Vlad the Black, was slain defending his fellows. The remaining five magi were able to complete the ritual while the sixth held Erik's forces off. Bolts of true mana began striking the land in front of them causing the earth to shake. Thousands of cracks appeared on the very ground on which the Svellbjarg warhost was standing, followed by loud ear-piercing groan. Then the hills surrounding the valley were blown open the raging tempest of mana and from behind them a tsunami cascaded down into valley. The Svellbjarg were washed away by the flood, screaming as they went down under, and neither Erik or Vlad's body has ever been seen since.   The seven magi were honoured as heroes on Sari-Ifa, but forever cursed by the people of Svellbjarg, who have never recovered from the devestation the Sundering unleashed upon them. The valley and the mountains behind it that were destroyed by the Sundering became the Shattered Strait.

I really like how you formatted this! I tend to go over board, but seeing this article reminded me that less is always more. You immediately got me into your story and back story very quickly. I think I would have liked to know more about the aftermath of the flood decades later. But I'm sure that's another article or book! Best of luck! -Amanda :)
