Atalantan

The Atalantans are a matriarchal society of nomadic herders and horseback riders. They life in the southern hills of Arcadnia, in an area known as the Hippolian Plains. They are subjects to the Duarchy of Myttenople.

History

The Atalantans have called the Hippolian Plains home for time immemorial and were amongst the tribes who came to The Shrine of the First Drop to participate in ritual combat and to pray for fresh water. When the other tribes began to settle down the Atalantans began raiding their farms instead and held on to their nomadic ways. However the populations of the other tribes outgrew that of the Atalantans. When the two largest city states in the region, Myttenople and Uwor declared war on each other for control of Arcadnia the Atalantans, like other tribes in the south, sided with the Uwor. Myttenople and its allies defeated Uwor, and in the year 1247 the Atalantans were conquered. For the first century little changed to the Atalantan way of life, but for the past 100 years more and more Arcadnian settlers have began setting up farms in the Hippolian Plains, setting up fences and restricting Atalantan movement in their home land. The Atalantans are now forced with a dilemma: Integrate into Arcadnian society and be subjected to its male dominated ways, or stay independent and slowly starve with the rest of their flock.

Shared customary codes and values

The Atalantans believe in the freedom of the plains and the self-sufficiency of an horse and its rider over all else. To an Atalantan settling down or backing away from a fight is a fate worst than death.

Gender Ideals

In Atalantan society it is tradition that the woman fight and the man herd. Back when the Atalantans first domesticated horses they were a lot smaller, and the man were to heavy to ride them. Only the woman with their lighter frame were able to ride them, but these horses gave them a great advantage over the neighbouring tribes and the Atalantans were able to dominate their region, creating the president that persists to this day.
