Apostophlogas

Just south of the city of Myttenople stands a large sandstone tower. On top of this tower a raging sapphire-blue flame burns brightly. Day and night priests work to feed the flame, so it might be kept ablaze ever on. Despite its size the flame radiates little heat, only letting one feel its power when they get close enough to touch it. Any message thrown into this flame while saying someone's true name aloud will burn up, and then appear at the place of the spoken person.

Purpose / Function

Only high ranking officials or those with the blessing of the Duarchs are allowed to make use of the Apostophlogas. Servants caught trying to send an unauthorised message or criminals caught trying to sneak in are thrown into the sapphire flames, their flesh burned away in agony and their bones send to an unmarked spot in the ocean, forever lost without burial or ceremony.

History

Once upon a time there was an young mage who married a beautiful woman from out of town. Together they had a beautiful son, who travelled of into a distant land to war. Years went by until the army came back home, who told the couple that their son's ship had been lost at sea. The wife, who had kept her youthful visage despite the raging of years, came up with an idea. They would build a beacon to lead their son home. The mage and his wife went to work and at first they build a beacon out of wood. But as the limber turned to ash there was no sign of their son. Then they created a hill, but even on top of the hill the beacon was not visible enough. Then they build a great tower, out of sandstone, that reached into the heaven. But still it was not yet enough and the flames died out. The mage had lost all hope, and wanted to throw himself into the pyre, but his wife decided she had to do something. She revealed herself to be a noble dragon and she used her blue flames to light the next flame. The arcane power of the dragon's flame allowed the mage to enchant it with a spell that would allow them to send a letter to anyone on the world. They send their long lost son a letter, hoping he would still be alive. After a month a letter came back from their son, telling them he was alive and that he would come back soon. He returned home with a wife of his own, who had recued him from the beach he had landed on, and three daughters. The mage and his wife were filled with joy, and the mage would spend the rest of his days as a loving father and grandfather to his family before passing away peacefully. Shortly after his wife would disappear without a trace, and the son and his daughter became the stewards of the tower his parents had created. Each of his daughters grew up to be more beautiful than the last, and the oldest went on to marry the duarch, who took over care of the tower after the son had passed away.
