Galeo

The Floating City of Merchants

Nothing compared to the hustle and bustle of a port town. Especially in the current age of trade... and Galeo was simply the place to be for any aspiring merchant, tradesman, or hero. There are two things that are interesting about this city. One, only 20 years have passed since its establishment on the southern cost and yet it is the most prosperous city other than the capital to the north. And two, it has outgrown the land it was built on. The complicated network of docks are updated or expanded routinely as more and more people come to start their fortunes.
The Magicians predicted its success just like they predict everything else, but whether it grew via divine prophecy or the growing renown that their words sparked for the once tiny village, no one really knows. Walking along the sporadic network of docks, you cant help but let your eyes wander over the vibrant colors of the tents and banners that line the streets. Shops are plentiful, selling everything from fresh spices and herbs to fabulous silks dyed in vibrant colors. Some merchants seem to be lucky enough to have small buildings, but most of them are calling for your attention to mats spread out along the walkway with arrays of oddities and trinkets. The sun bakes your skin as you wander for a minute down past some boats coming in.

Demographics

A merchant town naturally filled with merchant classes. These range in wealth though from peddlers to major trade
  • Dwarves, halflings, humans, and a surprisingly large orc population.
  • But every race could be found within the walls - even goblins.

Government

There is a heavy tax on exported goods such as spices, silks, and teas. These, as well as monthly fees for merchants to conduct business are used to promote growth and maintain the heavy wear and tear on the wooden streets and keep traffic coming into the city. The Merchant Guild assists the royal Chamberlain in managing these taxes and the treasury as well as every other town and there is a heavy presence of the magic factions here. The shops keep the coin flowing, allowing for Galeo to spread further out into the harbor.   The "law" is strict here, although corruption runs through the city guardsmen and court system alike. Anyone will tell you... keep your nose clean and don't go digging up trouble. You'll sooner be put away than paid.

Defences

The walls of Galeo are more of a formality than anything else, but there is little fear of an attack. The magicians would predict such a thing. The real danger is from within the walls via gang activity. There is however, a naval base less than 5 miles up the coast and the bank vaults are secure enough by the Royal Guard.

Infrastructure

Galeo is split into twelve districts, eleven of which are built like a labyrinth on ever-expanding docks, canals, and bridges. Due to price rates, work contracts, resources, and sometimes rivalries, twelve different contracting companies worked on the city. Each new contractor used different methods when building and the results unofficially became the dividing factors for each district. The system is crude, but it works - much like everything in Galeo.

Guilds and Factions

Galeo is the home of Phineas Feraldi and the Merchant Guild as well as home to the HQ of four of the eight magic factions. The most prevalent being the city's founder herself, Ryn Weaver.

History

As a new city, the history of Galeo is but a blip on the timeline. Established 20 years ago, it started as a small coastal port town around the head of the Asranian River that flows through Balaena to the capital at the river's delta. Despite its short lifespan, Galeo is slowly becoming

Architecture

The city is built on an intricate maze of docks that stretch out into the harbor. There are thirteen districts, each named after the type of wood used in its construction. Each district is slightly different in colors and style due to the differing styles of the construction companies that built them, but it all works thanks to the many boat taxi services.

Geography

Galeo is located right at the edge of a dense jungle on Baleana's southern coast. As such, it had to be built out into the harbor rather than in towards the jungle due to the dangerous wildlife that stalked in the darkness.

Natural Resources

Wood, magic items, fish, imports such as spices, silk, incense, and precious metals.
