The Shattered Sea

The Shattered Sea is a remnant of the great war that forged the continents of Axordia. Located in the heart of the Central Region of Ket'rani, the Shattered Ocean is a series of great lakes that streak across the land, lined with mountains. In the centre of the largest of these lakes, Lake Calandern, lies the city of Ostylia, a city constructed atop the ancient skeleton of an islewhale.   It is said that following the gods' great conflict, the Central Region of the newly formed Ket'rani was riddled with craters and chasms. In order to try to salvage the lands, the gods sent rain to the area, filling up each scar in the earth with fresh water, and forming the fragments of what is now referred to as the Shattered Sea. There are seven Sea fragments: Lake Calandern, Lake Kyanos, Lake Tiri, Lake Shil'tar, Lake Canfor, Lake Zoi'mati, and Lake Dacryn.

Lake Calandern

The largest of the lakes, lies at the very heart of Ket'rani. Atop it floats Ostylia, built on the skeleton of an ancient islewhale.

Lake Kyanos

The second largest of the lakes, contains the purest water in all of Kat'rani, and as such has been dubbed the Blue Lake, due to the bright blue colour the water turns the skin of the hydrowhales living there.

Lake Zoi'mati

This lake is brimming with life, with the bottom of the lake almost entirely covered with various aquatic plant life, it is laden with creatures, making it a prime spot for hydrowhales to find food. Many rare aquatic plants and flowers also live within this lake, making it an important environmental site for growing resources.

Lake Tiri

Referred to as the Glass Lake, Lake Tiri holds the clearest water in all of Ket'rani, so clear in fact that an observer can see all the way to the bottom of the lake at any point, as if there were no water there.

Lake Shil'tar

This lake lies near the borders of the Duranian Wildlands, meaning that it often freezes over during ice storms. As such, only certain species of aquatic creatures such as frostgills can live within it.

Lake Canfor

Often named 'the pool of light', this lake contains an unusual form of algae that absorbs light energy, causing it to glow in the darkness once the algae has been fully charged with energy. This algae is often harvested as both a valuable spell component, as well as for making lights for cities.

Lake Dacryn

The smallest of the lakes, Lake Dacryn is the only lake with a substantial salt proportion in its waters. It is said that this is because, as the last shatter formed by the gods, this crater was filled with their tears of regret for the damage that was inflicted on Axordia due to their conflict.

Ecosystem

The Fractured Ocean is home to a large number of unique aquatic creatures. In the larger lakes, freshwater hydrowhales swim beneath the surface. These whales have lived in the lakes for generations, and are slightly smaller than the main species of hydrowhales. They feed off the small fish and plant life in the lakes. Because of their continued survival, many believe that there are underwater passages that in face connect all of the lakes that make us the Fractured Ocean, but any such passages are yet to be discovered.

Hydrowhales

A slightly adapted species of hydrowhale live within the Fractured Ocean. Bright blue in colouration due to the fresh purity of the water, these whales are slightly smaller than the general hydrowhales found in the main oceans of the world, allowing them to live more freely in the smaller environment, and move through the secret underwater passages connecting the ocean fragments with ease.
