Golems

Golems were composed of mechanical and magical parts allowing them to move entirely on their own as long as they had a source of power, a magic stone. It is believed that the ancient Teremescans developed golems to test their knowledge of anatomy, being so enamored with the subject. It didn't take long, however, for these tests began to serve a more functional use.   Historians have found reason to believe that golems were used to perform menial tasks, taking the place of slaves in other societies. Records of a large, stable food supply with no proof of the population size required to support it point to this conclusion. With the small chores taken over by the golems, the Teremescans had more time to focus on cultural and technological advancement as well as improve the golems further.   Somehow, the Teremescans had found a way to give the golems sentience. Some speculate that the consciesness of a skeljudi or man was trapped inside the machines, but the truth remains unknown. But in playing god, the Teremescans signed their doom. For these now sentient golems would not simply take the opressive orders that they had been. Without the attachment that other creatures have for others, or the ability to feel pain, the golems revolted and became an independent force that was incredibly difficult to deal with and quickly wiped out the Teremescans.   But their anger was not limited to the Teremescans, as they took anyone who came across them as an enemy. It didn't take long for the surrounding nations to issue a kill on sight order for the golems and anyone seen to have some sort of connection to them. Very soon, all of the golems were either destroyed or deactivated due to running out of energy. It is fortunate that the Teremescans had not discovered the technology to recycle magic energy. While some remains of deactivated golems are surely still hidden away in places yet to be discovered, the technology to create them has been lost to all.   It is both fortunate yet a sad affair to say that golems no longer play a role in the modern world. Had the Teremescans not pushed too far, one can only imagine what society would be like today, with a large workforce of inorganic constructs to do the most boorish of work. To some extent, the effects can be seen today in those societies which make use of Skeljudi, though their numbers are nowhere near those of the golems during the height of Teremescan society.

Utility

According to research, the ancient Teremescan's used the golems to perform menial tasks such as farming and construction as well as for defense and as a weapon.
Discovery of an Ancient Golem
Access & Availability
Knowledge of golems to society is limited to old stories passed down over the years and the occasional discovery of their remains. Although most of the information on the construction and usage of the golems was a heavily guarded secret of the Teremescans, the information that remains is forbidden for a but a few people.
Complexity
Although the materials for the construction are quite simple, with many having been made from stone and metal, it is the process that remains unknown. Coupled with the fact that research on the ancient golems if forbidden, it is possible that no one will ever know how to recreate this ancient technology.
