Najani

The Najani people have lived among the desert of Tifira since time immemorial. Located on a southern continent, the desert is known for its dry, arid landscape, and the Najani people are known for how they have adapted to this landscape over the centuries. Most settlements are found around oases or at the desert's edge, though some Najani are known for forming nomadic tribes and traversing the expanse with the seasons. Many Najani make a living as farmers or herders. Their commerce is based on trade, though some will trade in currency from other countries, especially those who frequently travel or deal in importing and exporting goods.   Unlike their neighbors to the north, much of Najani culture revolves around a God rather than a Goddess. Many argue that the tenets of faith to Hilim are similar to those of Ionale, but methods of worship and mythology behind the two deities can differ wildly. While followers of Ionale are taught to respect and worship in every day good deeds and casual devotion, the faithful of Hilim live by methods that are more strict and structured. Daily devotionals are performed at noon, and it is thought that this practice originated as a way to combine worship with resting during the heat of the day.   Weaving is a craft that is passed down through generations, and which the Najani are often known for. The vibrant dyes they create from the various blooms of the desert give their creations striking colors. Most creations use the spun fiber from a native plant, and results in soft garments or durable tapestries, rugs, or other household necessities. Most clothing is also created from the same fibers, however Najani usually make their clothes in simple designs and then wear elaborate accessories, such as wraps, head scarves, or pashminas. The fabric is light and breathable, but protects skin from the harsh rays of the sun.   Another art frequently seen from Najani craftspeople is mosaic. Colored glass arranged in patterns or scenes usually decorates every Najani home, and are commonly given as gifts or made to commemorate special occasions and events. Some mosaics are created with colored stones found in the desert. These origin of these stones is a mystery, and they are not easy to come by. This means mosaics of this medium are often rare and expensive. It is believed that few of these remain in Najani possession, having been sold to nobility and wealthy collectors in other countries.
