Loc Lan

Demographics

Inhabited strictly by Earth Kingdom citizens, but the town is no stranger to travelers.

Government

Beryl is the governor of this town and the surrounding areas.

Defences

Earthbenders have also erected walls around the town. This wall includes stone pillars with can bar the way to boats travelling by the river. The city doesn't have much in terms of a military, but it is trained.

Industry & Trade

People live mostly off of trade coming and going from the river. Loc Lan doesn't produce much raw materials or agriculture, so it relies on artisans to sell wares.

Infrastructure

The town is built around the river and has a single watermill, around which the docks were built and expanded when Loc Lan grew. Because the water level rises occasionally, earthbenders will raise walls and lower the river bed to prevent flooding. Few bridges span the river, and they are elevated enough to let small boats pass underneath. Because of the lack of urban planning, the streets can be a maze to people not used to them.

Districts

The city grew around the river, with little regard to proper urban planning. As such, there are no official districts to speak of. People will refer to areas of the city by whatever landmark or business is located in the vicinity.

Guilds and Factions

Governor Beryl: Commands the few soldiers present here. She is mostly concerned with keeping the people fed and safe. She is also worried about the Fire Nation vanguard settling not too far away. Trader's Guild: Oversees the local production, imports and exports. Artisan's Guild: Takes care of the distribution of goods to artisans and of the sale of their goods, both locally and outside Loc Lan.

Points of interest

Shen's Tea House: The largest tea house in town goes up three stories, with two mezzanines. It has no rooms for rent. Being one of the tallest buildings in Loc Lan, it is often chosen as a convenient meeting spot. Chai tea is its specialty. The Governor's House: It is relatively modest, given the status of its resident. It houses administrative offices, archives, a courtroom and a jail. Waterwheel Inn: The main rest stop for travelers. Located near the watermill. The owner insists the sound of the mill helps lull his patrons to sleep.

Tourism

Very few people come strictly to visit. Usually, Loc Lan is another stop on the way to Ba Sing Se. Visitors will stay at the Waterwheel Inn and check out Shen'S Tea House before moving along the next day.

Geography

The city is built around a river bend, which effectively splits it in two. Thanks to the river, the surrounding lands can be farmed, but the yields are barely enough to feed the population.

Natural Resources

There are some fish in the river, which helps sustain the population.
