Tilfarie

Tilfarie was the last of the four original gods to come into being. Ilyasu, the All-Mother, created her as a spirit of light and heat -- the embodiment of fire. As the original goddess of fire, she wielded the primordial fire that helped shape the world and gave warmth and light to the Ilarin (the first people).

After the Great Remaking, her original powers were stripped away and given to other gods. She was cast down into the Void beneath the World, where she dwells as a spirit of malice, horror, and destruction.   Tilfarie was forced into the void by Ilyasu, the Creator, whose will she cannot defy. But Ilyasu did not decree that the erstwhile goddess of Fire could not attempt to escape, nor that she could not gather allies. And so Tilfarie, the Fallen One, took on the role of the Great Opposition in the eternal struggle that decides the fate of the world.   Tilfarie and all those who follow her constantly strive to break free from their prison in the Void Beneath. They wage an unending battle against the good spirits of the Underworld. Whenever they gain the upper hand, disaster ensues: crops fail, fields and forests burn, volcanoes erupt, and winters are long and cold.

Puppets of the Fallen One

Tilfarie no longer embodies the lifegiving phlogiston, but she retains power over the terrifying and destructive aspects of fire -- thus, fire is always a fickle and dangerous servant. It is naturally a horrific way to die, but death by fire holds additional horror for the living creatures of the world.   Any creature -- man or animal -- that dies by fire could become a puppet of the Fallen One. Some are possessed by the powerful spirits of the dead who follow the Firemistress; these are demons. Others become mere puppets: mindless, zombie-like creatures that can be directed by demons and whose only remaining desire is to kill. They do not bleed and feel no pain; the only way they can be killed is by being dismembered and the pieces scattered.
Horrendous Ecdysis
At the end of the Great Remaking, Tilfarie's power over the phlogiston was stripped from her. She was then exiled to the Void beneath the world.   Now her daughter Bretalie carries the phlogiston across the sky in the great lamp of the sun and helps the other gods hold her prisoner.
