Auden This Is All There Is

An unassuming small town in the middle of nowhere, drowned by vast fields; not open, but overrun with fully grown corn. The spitting image of a rural, southern Midwestern village, nothing that one can see on the surface breeds much distrust. For, it's a whole other thing that has kept the curious returning to it for centuries, the reason it was founded in the first place. "Deerfield" the sign reads, the visage of an antlered deer can be seen on the sign. "Welcome to our home among the fields" it beckons. Midday, drenched in sunlight, and yet one can not gaze past the height of the corn crop in full bloom. The dirt, the earth beneath, pulsates like the steady beating of the heart of something far larger than you, I, and this village. An absolute, creeping aura of unease chills to the bone- be warned all visitors, for something beneath here breathes.
