Rune Magic

Rune Magic is another lost magic only discovered through the recovery of broken and out of context ancient texts. Even during the Wars with Magic, Rune Magic was exceedingly rare. Practitioners of this magic were known as Rune Scribes; they would study the secrets of various runes of power - ancient sigils that embodied the fundamental magic of creation. It is believed that giants, of all races, were the first to master rune magic. Though there is evidence that other races eventually stole away or traded for their knowledge.
Due to the scarcity of records around rune magic it is likely that these Rune Scribes guarded their lore with the utmost care. What researchers have been able to discover is limited and largely incomprehensible.
Best as can be deciphered, Rune Magic granted individuals the power to unlock energy contained within magical symbols and sigils. However, not every such mark had the potential for power. Only those runes forged in the ancient days of creation, rumored to have been done so by the gods themselves, resonated with the fundamental magic of the world. These runes worked much like modern day magical items. They could be discovered, attuned to, and their magic manipulated in a variety of ways. Unlike magic items, only a practiced Rune Scribe could tap into all the benefits a particular rune had to offer.
