Athkatla shimmers like a mirage on the southern stretch of the Sword Coast, where desert dust meets sea salt and the Wyrmtail River cuts a lifeline through stone and sand. Often called the City of Coin, it is a place where fortunes are made, lost, and sometimes buried beneath centuries of trade and betrayal.
Ancient in its own right, Athkatla predates much of Amn’s current structure, rising from a modest riverside outpost to become one of the most powerful mercantile capitals in all Faerûn. Beneath its gilded domes and sun-bleached colonnades lie foundations older than most histories care to recall—layer upon layer of ambition, mystery, and compromise.
The city is governed by the elusive Council of Five, each a representative of one of Athkatla’s dominant factions. Their rule is pragmatic and profit-minded, balancing the interests of gold, magic, faith, shadow, and sand. Power flows not from crowns but from contracts, and even whispers are weighed like coin.
At its heart stands the awe-inspiring Waukeen’s Promenade, where golden spires catch the light of dawn and commerce is elevated to sacrament. The Temple of Waukeen—part vault, part cathedral—presides over the faithful with gilded grandeur, its influence echoing through markets, banks, and law alike.
But for all its opulence, Athkatla is no simple paradise. It is a city of veils and secrets, where elemental cults stir beneath mosaicked streets, dragons weave their influence through silk and steel, and the past waits patiently to be unearthed.
