Ryuk

Ryuk is a Half-orc cleric who worships Hermaeus Mora and is in pursuit of a long forgotten deity known as Anime. Since reading the Scroll of Anime, his mind has been permanently afflicted, and at each dawn he becomes either lawful good or chaotic evil.

Appearance

Ryuk has green skin and large eyes. He keeps his head bald and has a tattoo of a closed eye in the middle of his forehead. He wears armour underneath torn robes of the Cult of Hermaeus Mora. His shield bears a badly drawn rendition of the symbol of Anime.

History

Ryuk was born in a camp of orcish refuges who had been displaced from their homeland. His parents, whom he knows nothing about, were killed in a raid on the camp. The Cult of Hermaeus Mora sent aid relief and decided to take him in and raise him.
He trained as an acolyte, learning the ways of their order and pursuing rigorous educaiton, for his entire childhood. He was close to adulthood when, one day, within the deepest cloisters of the temple, he happened across an ancient chamber that had remained sealed for centuries. In that circular room, with steps descending down, a pedestal stood at the centre holding a scroll bearing the ancient teachings of a deity known only as Anime.
Fascinated, Ryuk took the scroll and attempted to translate it best he could. He memorised the bizarre script and supposed commandments within, and devoted himself to the unknown deity it spoke of. The scroll changed him, however. Its powerful words somewhat twisted his mind. Usually placid and calm in nature, he began to swing wildly between lawful good and chaotic evil.
A year later, when he was eighteen, High Priest Erudite discovered the scroll he had kept secret. For his heresy of pursuing ancient and forbidden knowledge that the cult had hidden for good reason, Erudite burnt it, turned his tattoo of an open eye into that of a closed one, and exiled him.
Hopeless and alone, Ryuk wandered the lands, following whatever whispers he heard of gods and deities in the hopes of discovering more information about Anime. This led him to the town of Goldmeadow, where he worked in the town guard to earn some money. He stayed there for a few months but found it sleepy and uneventful, and so made his way to Neverwinter, where there was promise of knowledge and work. He enlisted in the city watch and two years later, while doing his patrol of the city and a routine check of a tavern, overheard Gundren Rockseeker speaking to a few patrons about a job that would deliver more gold than they could ever dream of. The city watch didn’t pay well and Ryuk was immediately tempted by the promise of never working again and devoting his entire life to Anime. He spoke to the dwarf and departed with the ragtag party the very next day without alerting any of his superior officers.
