Neverwinter

I swear by the clocks of Neverwinter.
— old proverb
Neverwinter is a bustling port city on the Sword Coast, also known as the City of Skilled Hands and Jewel of the North. The city is named for its warm climate despite it being situated in the cold north, which is due to the Neverwinter River being heated by the fire elementals living underneath the nearby Mount Hotenow.

Districts

The City Core is the bustling centre of business and government. The middle class and merchants make their home here. Notable locations include:
  • Castle Never. It is here that Lord Protector Onika lives. It houses the council chambers and meeting places from where the city is governed.
  • Halls of Justice. A temple devoted to Tyr which also serves as the law court. Outside stands the official noticeboard where citizens and the government can post notices about jobs and services they require. Run by Law Master Eldeth, an elderly, no-nonsense human man.
  • Neverwinter College. The Great Library housed within is operated by the Cult of Hermaeus Mora.
  • Twenty in a Quiver. A respectable weaponry and armoury shop who supplies the local militia. Aranthiir, a wimpy high elf man, owns and runs the shop. He has a winged kobold helper named Cous Cous. A rough dwarf woman named Lyvraelyn operates the forge up the back.
  • The Bluelake District is reserved for the upper class, prosperous and wealthy denizens of Neverwinter. Manmade streams and rivers flow throughout the district, decorated with ornate bridges that arch overhead. It is walled off from the rest of the city and personal bodyguards protect the perimeter. Notable locations include:
  • Neverwinter Zoo.
  • The Moonstone Mask. A lavish inn said to house an exclusive brothel for high-paying clients.
  • Three spectacular, intricately carved bridges known as the Dolphin, the Winged Wyvern and the Sleeping Dragon.
  • Halcyon Bath House.
  • The Begger's Nest is a destitute slum made up of narrow streets, dirty homes and untrustworthy establishments. Notable locations include:
  • The Olde Graveyard. A now disused cemetery hidden from view by a shabbily constructed wall. Underneath lies unexplored tombs and crypts. Undead occasionally escape, resulting in attacks and deaths that the city has done nothing to remedy.
  • Cloak and Dagger Investigations. A private eye business owned by Makaria McAlister.
  • The Drunken Dragon. A tavern that remains constantly closed as it acts as a front for black market traders.
  • The Docks are the most prone to criminality. It is ruled by criminals and thugs and home to a prosperous black market. Through the main harbour, illegal wares are easily smuggled past oblivious and paid off city guards. Notable locations include:
  • The Mermaids Garters. A seedy tavern owned by a gnome man called Raswin. It has an underground section in the Marauder's Markets.
  • Bloodbath and Beyond. Run by a goliath man named Ghormash Skullcrusher. Half of the shop is devoted to various deadly weapons and sets of armour. The other half is stocked with candles, herbs, incense and home decor items.
  • Eponine's Ingredient Emporium. An alchemical supply store owned by Eponine Gale and once home to her infamous unicorn auctions.
  • The Motley Market. A long strip of gaudy stalls selling cheap baubles and quack cures.
  • The Motley Undermarket. This black market sits directly beneath the Motley Market in the sewers. It is where most of the illicit trade in Neverwinter takes place and where illegal goods are stored before being shipped out.
  • The Peninsula juts out into the harbour and is home to the Neverwinter Prison. It has three levels, with two upper ones for the normal populace and a lower level known as the Pit which houses the worst of the worst.

    Demographics

    Mostly human, elf and dwarf.

    Government

The city is currently under a lordship and the leadership of Lord Protector Hibernia. She is assisted by an elected council who assist in running the city. Tyr, the god of justice, holds great sway in the city and thus good governance is important to them. The law courts function every day, dealing with petty crimes and legal disputes, and taxes are enforced. Lord Protector Hibernia has begun to introduce heavier taxing on the wealthy nobles and guilds that function within the city to limit their power.

    Defences

The city is encircled by a fortified wall that is constantly patrolled by the Neverwinter Guard. Two main gates, northern and southern, lead in and out of the city. This wall is equipped with small catapults, especially towards the north, where Luskan raiders frequently attack from.

    Industry & Trade

The main imports are crafters and mercenaries. The main exports are clockworks, fish, logging and magical innovations.

    Guilds and Factions

The Neverwinter Guard act as the law keeping force in Neverwinter, led by General Sabine.
