Athena

Athena's lips, so close to the Black Spider's, twist into a sly grin. With an imperceptible and well practiced movement she slips her worn dagger from its sheath and plunges it into his stomach. Her lips come close to his ear. "Sorry, but I don't like a man who can't take a stabbing."   He staggers back, mouth agape, blood spilling between his spindly fingers as he grasps at the wound. A breath wheezes in his chest. "But... but why?"   She twirls the dagger and sheathes it, giving a nonchalant shrug. "Didn't you say you liked bad girls?"

Personal history

Athena's parents passed away when she was incredibly young, and as such she barely remembers them. She knows their names, hazy images of their faces, and the ornate necklace, a symbol wood elf prestige, that belonged to her mother, and nothing else. When they died, her home was searched by the New Elfington guard and that necklace confiscated as evidence. They attempted to take her to an orphanage but she ran, scared and confused and not willing to trust these strangers.   She found herself in the tourism district on the forest floor, where she befriended a group of kids who had also left their homes for various reasons. They survived by pick pocketing and scrounging where they could, which is where Athena first leant to steal and defend herself. The streets were rough and the children, young and unprotected, were often in danger of the monsters that prowled the edges of the city. This ragtag band of children often had frequent disappearances. No one knew where they went, or talked about it, but it was quietly acknowledged that they were likely dead. Occasionally, they would pass the time by reading scavenged books on all matter of subjects, or sharing gossip and folk tales. It was only through these stories that Athena began to learn of the world outside the forest city.   She remained with this group until she was a teenager, after which she began taking odd jobs around the city to get by - hauling carts, chopping wood, and rooting out infestations of giant rats. Sometimes these jobs took her up to the upper levels of the city, where the high elves live, and it is there that she began to slowly realise how oppressive and wrong the system was.   When she reached maturity, she decided to break into the Silverbrook residence and steal back the family necklace they had taken from her all those years ago. She knew she couldn't keep it for long, for fear of pickpockets and the city guard, so with her meagre amount of coin she paid for a blacksmith to replicate it, and gave this copy to her trusted friend Svetlana to leave in an agreed place outside of the city.   In an act of extreme defiance, she wore the gold necklace in public and was arrested for disorderly conduct and disruptive dissidence. She was initially held in the New Elfington prison but, after an unsuccessful attempt to incite rebellion there, was transferred to Neverwinter. Her time behind bars left her with knowledge of the criminal world that she put to good use.   She managed to escape, retrieved the iron necklace that Svetlana had hidden away for her, and lay low in Neverwinter. With a price on her head, she needed an inconspicuous way out of the city, which came in the form of one Gundren Rockseeker offerring good coin in a tavern for an odd job. She left the city the very next day with a ragtag band of adventurers and the iron symbol round her neck.
