Altair

History

Altair was born on the island of Dnaleri to a large, reclusive community of dwarves. Draconic blood ran through the family's veins but always skipped a few generations. The last to possess magical abilities was Altair's great grandfather, who perished pursuing answers about his draconic heritage. When Altair began to show signs of the same magical abilities, they were sent to study magic under a talented sorcerer. The work was difficult, involving menial chores and rigorous readings, but Altair learnt quickly.
The local healer also took on an apprentice - a beautiful dwarf named Teresa. They did similar chores, and collected water from the same well at the same time everyday. They became friends and, later on, fell in love.
Altair married Teresa when they were 54. They lived together happily for a while, but Teresa was unable to sit still and let her healing abilities go to waste while there were people in need. So, she left for several years to make the world a better place in whatever little ways she could, leaving Altair behind on Dnaleri. She returned, and it seemed like everything had gone back to normal. They were happy, together, once again. Teresa fell pregnant and they were overjoyed. Everything was good.
But not for long. One day, suddenly and mysteriously, Teresa disappeared. No one - not Altair, no her family - knew where she had gone. Had she left of her own accord? Had she been stolen away? Had she met a horrible end? Altair desperately searched for her for months, obsessed and despairing, but to no avail. Eventually, they had to accept that she was simply gone.
Altair then isolated themselves. They retreated into their study of their ancestry and magic. They pored over the adventuring journals left behind by their great grandfather. They studied the draconic blood and powerful magic that coursed through their body. They learnt to harness that magic to devastating effect.

Appearance

Altair is short and stocky. Along certain parts of their body, the skin is dappled with gold scales, hinting at their draconic ancestry. They have long hair and a well-groomed beard, which is usually neatly braided in typical dwarven fashion. They wear mage robes and wield a quarterstaff adorned with an ornamental spider taken from The Black Spider.

Altair is a talented sorcerer whose family blood runs with magic inherited from a dragon generations ago.
