Atem

Birthed from a dead god, Atem is a calm island amongst the storm of the void. Mortals rule the bright surface of the world, tenuously ruling over kingdoms built on slavery and ruthlessness. In the shadows and depths of the world, the monsters wait for a moment of weakness to take the world back.   Death lies at every corner, held off only by constant vigilance and fear. Warriors take up arms against the darkness, but fall to creatures that don't follow the same rules mortals do. Scoundrels sneak and pounce to take advantage of others' vulnerabilities, only to be felled by those they thought they trusted. Priests sacrifice portions of themselves to gain temporary boons from a dispassionate, uncaring god. Powerful magic is used by those with the power to wield it in the hopes of fending off the monsters but only draw the caster's soul closer to damnation; closer to the void.   Only those who believe that they will return to their creator in death hold any hope for the world. They pray that their Dead God still holds the power to deliver them from the chaos and horror of the world they fight to survive in. They are wrong.   There is no hope. There is only darkness. There is only the void.
