Guayal

The largest continent is Guayal, and lies to the east. Though large, most of the land is taken up by the Mother Mountains, which run the entire length of the continent. The continent is effectively separated into three regions: North, Central, and South.   North Guayal is bisected by the Mother Mountains into the Trampled Plains in the east, and the Sister Valleys in the west. The Trampled Plains is a temperate savannah, where all life revolves around the roaming bison herds that migrate endlessly with the seasons. Here, tribes of nomadic gnomes have made their home following after the bison, stopping only to trade with the coastal elves of Baru Tjali, who live at the mouth of the Tjali River. The Sister Valleys are so named after the four branches of the Mother Mountains that reach out to the western coast. The land here shares the same climate as to the east, but is considerably more fertile due to the three alpine rivers that flow into the Jaujan Gulf. The interior valleys and rivers have long been ruled by the elven princes from their stronghold at Baru Jauja; however, of late, a medley of dwarven and human sea reavers have colonised the coastlines of the Esteli and Daneli valleys.    Central Guayal begins at the Lautar Mire, an insect infested peat bog that has served as the graveyard of the reclusive bog halflings who jealously guard the treacherous passes, effectively cutting off all land travel between North and Central Guayal. Dominating the coastal plain is the Kitan Lake and the correspondingly named river system that empties into the Drowned Man’s Gulf, so named for the countless fishermen and reavers dragged to the depths by the deceptively placid waters. Unlike in the north, sea reavers have not been able to establish a significant presence, as battle-hardened orc city-states dot the plain, who though constantly fighting, never fail to unite against outside threats - at least temporarily. Forming the traditional southern limit of Central Guayal is the remnants of the Atamara forest, which year by year recedes further into the mountains just as the lumber needs of the city-states grow. Across the Mother Mountains, the Tiranal Forest stretches from mountain to sea, the most ancient of its trees almost rivalling some lower mountains in height. From their capital deep in the forest, the proud aarakocra Achtaran Kingdom extends their dominion out to the Komari islands, an important source of salt that provides the basis of their wealth.   South Guayal is blanketed by thick rainforests, so large and dense that they generate their own miniature climates. The Angol forest to the east is the most isolated of these rainforests, being nigh inaccessible by sea or on foot. This has allowed the dragonborn clans to flourish in their grand temple-cities, the largest of which, Kor Talas, lies at the edge of the sacred Talas Lake. Generally isolationist, the dragonborn guard the secret passes through the Mother Mountains, though they maintain a steady trade with the satyrs of the Vale of Pleasures to the south. The Vale of Pleasures contrasts starkly with the rest of Guayal, seeming more like a land out of fairytale, with its clear, rocky rivers, hot springs and gentle seasons. The satyrs of the Vale live in a state of general anarchy, living in tight-knit family units in a totally agrarian society. It is from the dragonborn that they receive their metals and minerals, bartering alcohol and other artisan goods in exchange. Aided by the calm waters of the Gentle Bay, the satyrs have managed to make forays down the coast, but have been stymied by the beast-infested mangrove swamps that cloak the southern coast, appearing almost as an extension of the great Morang rainforests. Almost perpetually rain-shaded, the Morang rainforests are divided into eastern, central, and western, each of which hosts large minotaur chiefdoms. Belligerent and passionate, these chiefs were once united in a mighty empire whose rule extended over all of South Guayal. However, civil strife and magical disaster saw the grand cities of the minotaur abandoned, and the fertile valleys nestled in the tail of the Mother Mountains ceded to tieflings who migrated out of planar rifts opened by the reckless magics of the minotaur mages. An uneasy truce keeps the two races from all out war, though the occasional blood feud can cause tensions to flare up.
