Lunaria

Lunaria is the United States' first and only moon colony. Residents of the Moon are often stereotyped to be self-absorbed and overly fashion-conscious. “If aliens attacked, they’d be too worried about how their hair looked!” To a degree, they are more concerned with appearances, but it’s not as bad as middle-aged Earthlings make it out to be. What they are concerned about is fitness. Maintaining a healthybody was top priority during the beginning of the Moon Colony for survival purposes, but technically, it isn’t as important anymore since there’s a steady supply of oxygen to the dome. Still, the attitude remains, and for the most part, residents of the Moon Colony are in tip-top shape. Those who aren’t have a stigma attached to them. Overweight residents of the moon are deemed as lazy freeloaders. Healthcare is virtually inaccessible for Moon residents with health problems. The general population thinks it would take too many resources to aid the sick, even though that isn’t a problem anymore. Often, improvements on healthcare are voted against, affecting even able-bodied members of society. Because of this, there has been an epidemic of anxiety and low self-esteem among those who aren’t able-bodied or fit. To rectify this, the colony established an annual fitness day to remind everyone that no one is as healthy as they could be, and everyone should strive to do better. Any positive effects this has on alleviating the stigma are temporary at best.

Government

It's part of the US government, but the US doesn't really know how to qualify it, so Lunaria tends to get spoken over in terms of politics. Because of the Interstellar Forces being under scrutiny, a lot of the American public wonders if the moon colony is necessary. Some consider it a waste of resources.

Defences

There's a police system and the Interstellar Forces, but they're both so close that it's hard to tell the difference. Prisons are extremely small, so only temporary prisoners are sent there to do mining elsewhere on the moon. The rest are relocated to a prison on Earth.

Industry & Trade

Lunaria's main focus is on the advancement of technology, since that's what pretty much keeps them alive. It has a booming electronics industry, and transports new gadgets to Earth.   On a smaller scale, the fashion industry is also flourishing. The moon's become sort of a hotspot for trendy futuristic looks, and Earth wants in on that, so a large sum of money is made from hugely inflating prices on clothes exports.

Infrastructure

Lunaria is covered by a thick, clear dome. In the daytime, images are projected on it to resemble clouds, and after "sunset", the projectors shut off to show the starry sky outside. Most of Lunaria is paved with cement, but in the "suburbs" there are artificial hills lined with grass and a river from the water purification plant. A subway system lies underneath the city.

History

After the first moon landing, the Interstellar Forces decided to show off even more by making a colony on the moon. Construction was started the very next year and finished 15 years later, naming it Lunaria. Early Lunaria wasn't the most convenient place to live. It was originally a few small buildings for members of the IF and their families to live in. Civilians weren't allowed citizenship until a few years later, probably the mid 60's, when it gained status as a city. Wearing a space suit all the time was mandatory, except for inside the house, and even after construction on the dome was finished, citizens were still required to wear their oxygen suits inside until no traces of moon dust were detected. Residents were required to stay physically fit in order to save on resources like medical supplies and oxygen consumption. This was enforced to the point where it was considered a crime not to do so. Health Monitors checked around Lunaria every so often to monitor each citizen, and would give tickets to those who they deemed not healthy enough. Anyone with three tickets got immediately evicted, along with their family. This practice stopped somewhere around the late 70's, when the supply of resources became more steady.   Lunaria was intended to serve as a source of revenue and funding for the Interstellar Forces' moon base. Because of this, the IF and Lunaria are bound together, even if Lunarians didn't know what the moon base was being used for. The shock of it turning out to be for foreign intelligence/weapons base wore off quickly, but the real shock is that it was so poorly managed that a couple workers almost singlehandedly sparked a war. The IF's reputation plummeted after that, and along with it Lunaria's. People started questioning the necessity of a city on the Moon, and it launched debates on whether the colony should still be allowed to exist. Construction and expansion of the city continued, but it was uncertain how long it would last.   Around Year 98, the Moon Colony’s resources stabilized enough for there to be a boom in the fashion industry. People who lived inside of the dome ditched their helmets and let their hair down. Space suits were getting less bulky by the year, making navigation easier, and improving quality of life. Not to mention, they were fashionable as well! Because oxygen had stabilized inside of the dome, there was no longer a need to wear the suits in case of emergency, but a lot of people wore them anyway for their streamlined look and vibrant designs. Cosmetic space suits were even gaining popularity back on Earth.

Architecture

High-rise buildings all over the place. Gotta keep all those people somewhere, and Lunaria's not big enough for real estate, unless you live outside the dome. Houses outside the dome are far and few between and tend to be rounded to better keep air in. These houses come with their own oxygen supply system and a walk-in area that air-blasts moon dust off of the inhabitants (moon dust is really dangerous on the lungs). There's virtually no break-ins outside of the dome. Doing so would mean destroying the oxygen system and killing everyone inside. Very few thieves are willing to do that.
