Júk's Song

Júk was a giant man, who marched the world around,   to every town he came he played a little bout.   He marched with his banjo and with every step he took,   the earth began to tremble and every tree was shook.   Then he passed little Paterreagh and the kids jumped out of bed,   to join him on his journey to wherever it may led.   Júk sat at the billabong, playing his little song,   then he went to sleep, for his day was getting long.   The kids all went home, talking 'bout the fun they had,   but the mothers feared the giant, and they all got very mad.   The mothers went to the sheriff, asking to do something at least,   so he gathered his man, and went out to slay the beast.   The sheriff rode to the billabong with his troopers, one, two, three,   and stabbed poor Júk in his kidney, before he could ever see.       Now old Júk is no more but don't be sad you see!   for when you visit Swagman's rest, you might catch a bit of his glee.   Good old Júk might appear to you, playing his little song,   That you can keep in mind for the journey along.
