Zaswar

Zaswar is a small, serene settlement nestled within the craggy foothills of the Whispering Alps, a secluded region where the Kalashtar have lived for generations. Founded as a refuge for those who hold deep connections to the realm of dreams, the village is a place of spiritual practice, dream protection, and quiet contemplation. The Kalashtar, who are bonded to the enigmatic quori spirits, live in harmony with the dream world, but they are ever-vigilant against the dangers that emerge from it. Recently, a group of Owlin scholars arrived in Zaswar to study the Illuminated Archive, a hidden repository of knowledge about other planes. Though modest in material wealth, Zaswar thrives on its rich spiritual heritage and the collective dream work its people engage in to ensure the safety of their community.   Zaswar is a dreamlike sanctuary, where the Kalashtar balance between two worlds, defending their village and its spiritual wealth while keeping alive their ancient connection to the realm of dreams. The arrival of the Owlin has only deepened the village’s mystique, as they bring new layers of knowledge and protection to this hidden refuge in the Whispering Alps.

Demographics

Kalashtar (75%) – The native people of Zaswar, deeply spiritual and tied to the quori, focused on maintaining balance between the material and dream realms. Owlin (25%) – Recently arrived scholars and protectors of the Illuminated Archive, curious about interplanar knowledge and its applications.

Government

Zaswar is led by a Council of Dreamkeepers, a group of five Kalashtar elders, including Lemelk, the village’s spiritual leader. The council governs through consensus, focusing on maintaining the spiritual and dream-related well-being of the village rather than enforcing strict laws. The Owlin researchers maintain their own enclave, led by a scholar who collaborates closely with the Dreamkeepers on matters related to the Illuminated Archive.

Defences

Zaswar has no traditional walls or military forces. Instead, its defenses are spiritual:
  • Wardstones: Large stones imbued with enchantments placed around the village to deter malevolent dream creatures and spirits from entering.
  • Dreamkeepers: Skilled spiritual warriors who guard the village from quori influence and lead rituals to maintain balance between the dream realm and the material world.
  • Owlin Defenders: Though primarily scholars, the Owlin who protect the Illuminated Archive have developed magical wards and use ancient techniques to guard against outside threats.

Industry & Trade

Zaswar’s primary “industry” revolves around spiritual guidance and dream protection, with the Kalashtar offering their expertise to those who seek help navigating troubled dreams. They also trade herbs, woven dreamcatchers, and minor enchanted items to nearby villages.

Infrastructure

Zaswar’s infrastructure is simple but functional. Houses are made from local stone and wood, built with natural designs that blend into the landscape. The settlement has several communal spaces for meditation, dream work, and spiritual gatherings. There are no elaborate roads or advanced facilities, but what Zaswar lacks in luxury, it makes up for in the safety and serenity it offers its inhabitants. Main Well: At the heart of Zaswar lies a communal well, a central gathering point where the villagers meet for daily interactions and dream-related rituals. Dreamkeeper Hall: The largest structure in the village, where the Council of Dreamkeepers holds their meetings and where spiritual guidance is given.

Districts

  • Dreamwalker’s Row – Where the most spiritually attuned Kalashtar live, focusing on protecting the community from quori-born nightmares.
  • Owlin Enclave – A recently established area at the village’s edge, consisting of several low, stone-roofed buildings where the Owlin researchers live and work.
  • Meditation Grounds – An open area surrounded by stone monoliths, used for group meditation, dream journeys, and rituals to ward off evil spirits

Assets

Zaswar does not possess significant material wealth, but the village has a few humble shops to meet the basic needs of its inhabitants:
  • Herbalist (Thala’s Draughts): Provides remedies and incense, including specialized blends used to enhance dream clarity and ward off nightmares.
  • Tailor (Threads of Reverie): Sells robes and garments woven from local mountain wool, often imbued with calming enchantments.
  • General Store (The Dreamcatcher’s Rest): Offers basic supplies, foodstuffs, and spiritual tools such as dream catchers and charms.
Illuminated Archive: Though hidden deep within the bordering mountains, this ancient library is the village’s most valuable asset, holding rare knowledge about other planes, dreams, and forgotten magic.

Guilds and Factions

  • The Dreamkeepers Guild – A respected group of Kalashtar who train in the arts of dream-walking and spiritual defense.
  • The Illuminated Circle – A faction of Owlin scholars focused on researching the Illuminated Archive and protecting its secrets.

Points of interest

  • The Illuminated Archive – A hidden library of ancient knowledge and planar secrets, heavily guarded and accessible only to a select few.
  • The Meditation Grounds – Sacred stone monoliths where villagers gather for dream rituals and collective meditation.
  • Wardstone Circle – A ring of ancient stones on the outskirts of the village, imbued with protective magic that keeps malevolent quori spirits at bay.
Temple within the The Illuminated Archive – In Zaswar, the renowned center of learning, the Illuminated Archive stands as a beacon of knowledge and devotion to Ioun. This vast, labyrinthine structure is part temple, part archive, and spans multiple floors connected by spiral staircases and grand atriums. Enchanted globes of light float in the air, casting a warm, inviting glow over the polished stone halls lined with ancient texts and relics. The Archive’s heart is a sprawling sanctuary dedicated to Ioun, where intricate, glowing murals depict her in various forms, from a young scholar to an elder sage.   At the center of the sanctuary stands a colossal, open book crafted from iridescent crystal, symbolizing the boundless wisdom Ioun imparts. Each page of this enchanted book seems to turn on its own, revealing new passages, drawings, or insights in the form of illusions, guiding visitors toward hidden truths. Priests and acolytes here maintain vast collections of knowledge, inscribing important discoveries and revelations onto tablets and scrolls to preserve them for future generations. Scholars from across Astrium travel to the Illuminated Archive seeking guidance, and the temple’s clergy often engage in teaching, sharing knowledge, and preserving secrets uncovered in the realms of magic, history, and nature.

Tourism

Few outsiders visit Zaswar, but those who do come seeking the village’s spiritual services:
  • Dream Pilgrims: Visitors hoping to find spiritual guidance or to gain protection from nightmares.
  • Scholars and Mages: Occasionally drawn by rumors of the Illuminated Archive and its wealth of interplanar knowledge.
Dreamfire - 24th Enigmaris   The Festival of Dreamfire is Zaswar's most sacred and vibrant celebration, held annually during the mid-autumn month when the boundary between the waking world and the dream realm is said to be at its thinnest. This festival honors the Kalashtar’s unique connection to dreams and the spirit world, as well as their role as protectors of Astrium from the quori—malevolent dream spirits. The festival serves as both a spiritual renewal and a celebration of the unity between the Kalashtar and the recently arrived Owlin, whose work in the Illuminated Archive now intertwines with the Kalashtar’s dream-walking traditions.   Origins and Significance The Festival of Dreamfire was first established by the Kalashtar village elder, Shanaliar Brightdream, in Year 318, after the founding of Zaswar. The purpose was to strengthen the dream-walking abilities of the Kalashtar and ward off the quori who sought to corrupt the minds of mortals during this vulnerable time of year. The festival’s name derives from the dreamfire, a mystical flame said to be born from the union of a dreamwalker’s spiritual energy and the light of the stars.   Key Rituals and Events
  • The Procession of Stars - The festival begins at sunset with the Procession of Stars, a solemn march where Kalashtar villagers carry lanterns filled with a soft, ethereal light, representing the purity of dreams. Lemelk, the village’s current elder, leads the procession, carrying a smoke censer that wards off evil spirits. The procession weaves through the streets of Zaswar, passing by dreamcatchers hung over every doorway, which are believed to filter nightmares from the dream realm.

  • Dreamfire Lighting Ceremony - At the heart of the festival is the Dreamfire Lighting Ceremony, held in the Meditation Grounds beneath a circle of ancient wardstones. A large bonfire is lit with a mixture of enchanted herbs and dream-infused incense. The Kalashtar gather around it, focusing their spiritual energy into the fire, which burns in vibrant shades of blue, purple, and silver. This fire is said to mirror the colors of the dream realm and acts as a beacon, drawing benevolent spirits while keeping the malevolent quori at bay.

  • Dreamwoven Market - During the day, the Dreamwoven Market comes to life. Stalls are filled with artifacts, charms, and dream-related goods made by the Kalashtar and Owlin artisans. Dreamcatchers, infused with spiritual energy, are the most sought-after item, alongside herbal dream teas and enchanted sleep stones, which help visitors enhance their own dreams. The Owlin scholars also display some of the ancient tomes they have copied from the Illuminated Archive, available for curious minds to peruse.

  • The Night of Dreamwalking - As night falls, the most skilled dreamwalkers among the Kalashtar take part in a communal dream journey, where they enter the dream realm together to protect Zaswar from quori intrusions. Villagers gather around the Meditation Grounds to witness the dreamwalkers as they meditate, channeling their power to ward off any malevolent forces attempting to breach the barrier between dreams and reality. It is a dangerous ritual but essential for maintaining Zaswar’s spiritual safety.

  • Owlin Celestial Observance - In recent years, the Owlin have added their own contribution to the festival, holding an event called the Celestial Observance. At midnight, they gather at a high peak overlooking Zaswar to observe the alignment of the stars, a crucial time for recording cosmic phenomena that impact the dream realm. The Illuminated Archive records are said to glow softly under these stars, providing the Owlin with new insights into the mysteries of other planes.

  • Shared Dreams Ritual - On the final night of the festival, the Shared Dreams Ritual is held. Villagers and visitors alike lie down in a circle around the dreamfire, holding hands as they enter a shared dream, orchestrated by the most powerful of the Kalashtar. In this shared dream, they are united in a peaceful landscape, where worries and nightmares melt away, symbolizing the unity of mind and spirit.
Festival Cuisine The food served during the Festival of Dreamfire is as unique as the celebration itself. Dreamfruit pastries, made from rare fruits grown in the highlands, are served alongside herbal dream teas that calm the mind and enhance one’s connection to the dream world. The most famous dish is the Starbloom Salad, made from a luminescent flower that only blooms during the festival, said to improve spiritual clarity and protect against nightmares.   Music and Dance Music is a key part of the festival, with instruments made from crystal and enchanted wood used to create sounds that mirror the soft hum of dreams. Lullaby dances are performed, where dancers move slowly and fluidly in circular formations, imitating the cycles of sleep and dreams. The melodies resonate through the stone streets, creating an atmosphere of peace and harmony.   Dreamfire Blessing At the end of the festival, Lemelk bestows the Dreamfire Blessing upon the village. The villagers gather one last time around the dwindling dreamfire, where he sprinkles enchanted herbs into the flames, sending wisps of smoke into the sky. The blessing is meant to ensure that the dream realm remains peaceful in the coming year and that no malevolent forces will haunt the dreams of Zaswar’s inhabitants.   Legacy of Dreamfire The Festival of Dreamfire is not only a time of celebration but a reaffirmation of Zaswar’s place in the spiritual defense of Astrium. For the Kalashtar, it is a reminder of their duty as guardians of the dream realm, while for the Owlin, it marks their role in safeguarding ancient knowledge and supporting their Kalashtar allies in their shared pursuit of peace and enlightenment.
