Government
Yilas is governed by a Council of Shadows, a ruling body composed of prominent Drow families and influential leaders from other night-dwelling races. The Council makes decisions on defense, trade, and the welfare of the city, while also managing diplomacy with other regions of Astrium. The Matron of Shadows, currently Valindra Vel'thal, the great-granddaughter of the city’s founder, holds the highest seat of power and oversees the council. The Matron’s word is final in any disputes and military matters.
Defences
Umbra Quarter: The heart of Yilas, where the Council of Shadows meets and the noble Drow families reside. This district is heavily fortified and adorned with grand halls that can change appearance through illusionary magic.
The Inkwell Docks: The coastal side of the city, fortified with thick, enchanted stone walls and defensive cannons. The small navy of Yilas patrols this area, guarding against pirates and sea threats. The docks are where trade goods from beyond the Inky Bay are received.
Starlight Market: A bustling underground marketplace where artisans, merchants, and traders deal in rare items from the Underdark and the Moonscape Moor. Exotic fungi, crystals, enchanted weaponry, and shadow-infused magic items are all traded here.
Vel'thal Bastion: The central military district, housing the barracks for the Drow’s formidable night patrols and the naval defense force. This area is also home to elite shadow assassins and warlocks trained in combat and espionage.
Industry & Trade
Yilas thrives on the export of shadow-infused crystals, rare Moonscape herbs, and magically enhanced weaponry. The city imports luxury items, food, and magical goods from regions more accessible to the sunlit world.
Fishing in the Inky Bay also provides a rare delicacy: the Moondrift Fish, a bioluminescent species that is prized for its taste and magical properties. The city's navy protects this crucial resource from pirates.
Infrastructure
Yilas' infrastructure is a combination of sophisticated subterranean tunnels, sturdy fortifications, and shadowed city streets. The entire city is built to accommodate those who prefer the dark, with dim magical lighting, enchanted streets that adjust to moonlight cycles, and extensive underground sections.
Transmission Tubes exist between key points in the city, a legacy from Opheliax’s era of technological influence, but have been adapted with shadow magic for privacy and concealment. Deep within the city, catacombs and caverns serve as residential areas and marketplaces, with higher sections housing military forces and strategic defenses.

Nightfall Ascension -
Nightfall Ascension is the most revered holiday in Yilas, a grand celebration of the Drow’s connection to the shadows and their ascension to power through cunning, resilience, and the dark arts. Held on the longest night of the year, this holiday marks the founding of Yilas by Drovira Vel'thal in 499 AD and honors the Drow’s mastery of their environment and their rise as a dominant force on the coast of the Moonscape Moor.
During this event, the city becomes a vibrant display of shadow magic, illuminated only by dim, magical moonlight. The citizens engage in ritual ceremonies, grand processions, and displays of martial and arcane power, reinforcing the values of strength, secrecy, and unity.
Rituals and Events:
The Shadow Procession: At sunset, the citizens of Yilas begin a massive procession from the Council of Shadows Hall, where the Matron of Shadows leads a parade of warriors, priests, and civilians through the city. The procession weaves through Yilas' major districts, each participant carrying an enchanted lantern that casts long shadows across the streets. This parade symbolizes the Drow's emergence from the Underdark and their control over the surface world.
The Moonlight Duel: One of the central highlights of Nightfall Ascension is the Moonlight Duel, a ceremonial combat held in the Vel'thal Bastion arena. Elite warriors and mages from Yilas’ military, including members of the Veil Keepers and The Blackened Hand, engage in duels to demonstrate their prowess in both shadow magic and martial combat. These duels are not lethal, but they are intense, and victory brings great honor to the victor’s family and house.
The Rite of Ascension: As the moon rises, Yilas' spiritual leaders perform the Rite of Ascension atop the cliffs overlooking the Inky Bay. During this ritual, the most promising young Drow and shadow-casters are presented before the Council of Shadows and Matron of Shadows. They undergo a trial of illusion, stealth, and combat, proving their worth to ascend in rank within Yilas society. This ritual serves as both a coming-of-age ceremony and a test of strength, cunning, and magical prowess.
The Silent Market: As the city revels in celebration, the Starlight Market transforms into the Silent Market, where all transactions occur without words. Merchants and buyers communicate through gestures and shadowed illusions, reflecting the Drow’s mastery of secrecy and subterfuge. Rare items from the Underdark and enchanted goods are traded, and alliances are forged in whispered conversations.
The Moonfall Feast: Near midnight, families and clans gather for the Moonfall Feast—a lavish banquet featuring Moondrift Fish, fungi delicacies, and other rare goods from the Moonscape Moor. These feasts often last well into the early morning, where stories of past victories, daring espionage, and subterfuge are shared around the table, reinforcing the city's bond of secrecy and power.
Key Locations for Celebration:
Vel'thal Bastion: The duels and military demonstrations take place in the bastion, where warriors showcase their skills in front of the gathered crowds.
Council of Shadows Hall: The starting point of the Shadow Procession and the political heart of the city, the hall is adorned with dark banners and lit by enchanted orbs during the festival.
The Moondrift Docks: The navy hosts exhibitions of naval maneuvers and magical cannon fire from the city's fortified walls, showcasing the strength of Yilas’ sea defenses.
Symbolism and Purpose:
Nightfall Ascension is not just a celebration of the city's founding, but a reaffirmation of the Drow's values: power through darkness, unity through secrecy, and strength through cunning. The holiday emphasizes the importance of loyalty to Yilas and its people while reminding them of their place in a world that often fears the shadows. It's also a time when young Drow aspire to earn their place among Yilas' elite, aiming to leave a lasting legacy within the city's shadowed history.
This night-long festival culminates in a deep sense of community and pride for the Drow and other night-dwelling races, reinforcing their place within the city and their power over the coastal moor and bay.
Architecture
The architecture of Yilas reflects its connection to darkness and shadow. Buildings are made from moonstone-infused basalt, giving them a faint, pale glow under moonlight. Structures are tall and narrow, often adorned with spiderweb-like latticework, a nod to the Drow's heritage. Hidden tunnels and shadowy alcoves are integrated into the architecture, providing spaces for covert operations and personal privacy.
Geography
Yilas is nestled between the Inky Bay to the west and the vast Moonscape Moor to the east. The city itself is perched on craggy coastal cliffs, with fortified walls and towers facing the sea to repel naval invaders. The Inky Bay is notorious for its dark, nearly black waters, which hide submerged dangers and have been a challenge to navigators for centuries.
Climate
The climate of Yilas is cool and damp, with thick fog often rolling in from the bay, obscuring the city's skyline. The Moonscape Moor experiences frequent overcast skies, and the city itself enjoys long periods of twilight, which suits the city's nocturnal inhabitants. Moonlight is considered a blessing, while sunlight is shunned or blocked out by dark canopies.
