Xublouze Archipelago
The Xublouze Archipelago is a formidable group of islands located in the southwestern corner of Astrium, known for its treacherous waters and the fierce orcish sailors who command the seas with unrivaled ferocity. The islands are a rugged and dangerous terrain of jagged cliffs, deep coves, and stormy weather, making them both a natural fortress and a challenging area for outsiders to navigate. The orc clans that dominate the archipelago are renowned for their naval prowess and their mastery of sea combat, ruling the waters with a combination of brute force and tactical brilliance.
The archipelago’s most mysterious feature is the presence of an ancient, gigantic dragon turtle, whose massive shell bears the ruins of an old castle where the famed archmage Xakar, later known as The Overseer, studied the effects of planar travel. The islands and the dragon turtle itself are steeped in mysticism and danger, with many adventurers drawn to the area in search of secrets from forgotten realms.
Points of Interest:
The Tempest Spire
The Tempest Spire is a towering sea stack that rises dramatically from the ocean in the center of the archipelago. This natural rock formation is constantly battered by fierce storms and lightning, giving it an imposing and eerie presence. At the summit of the spire, ancient orcish inscriptions detail rituals meant to harness the power of the storms for navigation and combat, and it is said that the orcs’ most revered shamans used to ascend the spire to commune with the spirits of the storm. Adventurers who brave the treacherous climb may find remnants of these rituals, along with powerful weather-altering artifacts said to have been left behind by the shamans.
The Spire also serves as a navigation beacon for orcish sailors, who use the constant lightning strikes and roaring winds to mark their bearings during rough seas. Only the most skilled climbers and sailors have managed to scale it without being swept away by the fierce winds or the crashing waves below.
Xakar’s Sanctum
On the back of the gigantic dragon turtle lies the ruins of Xakar’s Sanctum, the remains of an ancient castle that once belonged to the archmage Xakar, a scholar obsessed with planar travel. Though much of the structure has crumbled, its towering spires and arcane sigils still radiate magical energy. The castle, and the turtle it resides on, are in constant motion as the creature roams the archipelago’s waters, making the ruins difficult to access. Within its shattered halls, explorers can find remnants of Xakar’s research, from cryptic notes on planar gateways to enchanted artifacts capable of altering reality. However, the sanctum is also filled with dangerous traps and lingering magic that warps the minds of those who linger too long.
The Singing Reefs
Off the coast of one of the larger islands lies the Singing Reefs, a vast coral formation known for the eerie, melodic sounds it produces as the wind and tides pass through it. The reefs are beautiful but deadly, with sharp coral that can slice through the hull of an unwary ship. Beneath the surface, the reefs are said to hold the remains of a shipwreck graveyard, where the bones of past adventurers and their treasures lay. Many orcish sailors avoid these waters, believing that the haunting song is a lure meant to drag ships to their doom, but some braver souls venture here in search of lost riches or to unlock the secrets of the reef’s haunting melody.
Durxum’s Rest
On one of the central islands lies Durxum’s Rest, a ceremonial site dedicated to the legendary pirate king Durxum, an orcish chieftain whose undefeated reign over the waters is still celebrated by the sailors of the archipelago. The site features a massive stone altar surrounded by carved totems representing Durxum’s victories, and it is here that the orcs hold their coming-of-age rituals for young warriors, as well as their annual festivals celebrating Durxum’s legacy. It is said that Durxum’s treasures, including an enchanted cutlass and a map to hidden islands, are buried somewhere near the altar, though none have ever found them.
