Illusaris is a city where nothing is ever quite what it seems. Its inhabitants thrive on deception, artistry, and adaptability, making it one of the most enigmatic and elusive settlements in all of Astrium.

Government

Illusaris is governed by Masks, a group of six prominent Changelings who each represent different aspects of the Changeling identity and culture, including Diplomacy, Artistry, Covert Operations, Commerce, Knowledge, and Illusion Magic. They rule in a fluid and collaborative manner, reflecting the adaptable nature of their people.

Defences

Illusaris' primary defense lies in its ever-shifting nature and powerful illusion magic. Enemies find it nearly impossible to navigate or understand the true layout of the city. The Whispering Mists, a magical fog that surrounds the city, makes it difficult for outsiders to enter undetected. In addition, the Veiled Guard, an elite group of Changelings trained in both combat and illusion, protect the city from physical and magical threats. They specialize in deception and ambush tactics, using the city's fluid nature to their advantage.

  • Illusion Magic and Enchantment: The most valuable export, with enchanted items and illusion spells being highly sought after across Astrium.
  • Covert Services: Changelings from Illusaris are often hired as spies or diplomats, making espionage one of the city's most lucrative industries.

Infrastructure

Illusaris is a city of fluidity and illusion, where buildings can shift their appearance, structures seem to warp and flow, and the streets may change shape or layout, reflecting the whims of the Changeling population. The infrastructure is magically augmented, with illusions weaving through the very stone and wood of the buildings. Inhabitants can change their homes’ appearance at will, creating an ever-shifting cityscape. Public transportation includes illusionary pathways, which allow inhabitants to create short-lived bridges or roads as they travel, keeping the city dynamic.

Districts

  • The Masked Quarter:
The heart of Illusaris, where the Council of Masks resides and holds court. This district is also the center of diplomacy, with embassies from other nations and places of negotiation. Here, the architecture is most volatile, as it reflects the constantly shifting nature of Changeling politics and diplomacy.  
  • The Hall of Reflections:
A sprawling artistic district where the city’s most talented illusionists and performers create visual and magical spectacles. This district hosts The Grand Festival of Illusions each year, a breathtaking display of the Changelings’ shape-shifting abilities.  
  • Veiled Spires:
Home to the Covert Operations sector, where Changelings are trained as spies, infiltrators, and diplomats. Many agents travel from this district, where guilds and factions tied to espionage operate in secret.  
  • Whispering Harbor:
The main port district of Illusaris, where ships bring in trade goods from around Astrium. This district is also known for its shady dealings, as many covert operations begin or end here. The harbor shifts in design to confuse unwanted visitors or spies.  
  • Spectral Gardens:
A peaceful and serene district known for its illusionary flora, where residents can reshape their surroundings into a paradise of their choosing. This district is also where many Changeling artisans and illusionists live, offering magical services to transform spaces.

  • Apothecaries: Specialize in illusion potions, memory-altering concoctions, and shape-shifting aids.
  • Tailors: Known for creating adaptive clothing that can shift alongside the wearer’s forms.
  • Blacksmith: Creates armor and weapons capable of shifting their appearance.
  • Illusion Magic Vendors: Sell spell components, scrolls, and enchanted items that manipulate perception and appearance.

  2. The Veiled Network: An espionage faction that trains and deploys Changelings as spies and infiltrators across Astrium. Their reach is vast, and they hold significant sway in Illusaris' politics.
  3. The Council of Shadows: A covert faction that handles high-profile diplomacy and secretive deals with other nations, often behind the scenes.
  4. The Shifting Brotherhood: A faction of renegade Changelings who believe in using their shape-shifting abilities for freedom and chaos. Though not openly hostile, they oppose the rigid governance of the Council of Masks.

History

Illusaris was founded when people identified as changelings were exiled to the island of Vathary on the Swirling Peninsula. The group of islands where Astrium's mistakes and experiments live in their type of peace. They do leave the island as much as possible and explore now they have reduced limitations on their bainshment

  • The Hall of Mirrors: A vast, maze-like building where visitors can explore illusionary landscapes and face shifting realities. Many Changelings come here to practice their shape-shifting and illusionary abilities.

Tourists marvel at the city's shifting architecture and take part in immersive experiences where reality itself is constantly in flux.   The Grand Festival of Illusions in Illusaris, while condensed into a single day, is an extraordinary event that encapsulates the Changeling people's essence: transformation, artistry, and magic. The festival is held annually, marking the day Illusaris was founded, and is packed with a series of spectacular events, making it one of the most anticipated days in Astrium.  
  • Morning: Dawn of Shifting Forms
At sunrise, the entire city is cloaked in a shimmering mist of illusion magic. As the mist lifts, the buildings and streets gradually transform, adopting fantastical appearances—elaborate towers of glass, winding streets of flowers, and floating platforms that defy gravity. The city’s architecture itself becomes a living showcase, changing every hour throughout the day.  
  • Midday: Shape-Shifting Showcase
At noon, the heart of Illusaris gathers for the Shape-Shifting Showcase, where Changelings display their abilities. Participants engage in friendly competitions, morphing into mythical creatures, famous figures, or even entirely original forms. The most creative and seamless transformations earn the title of “Master of Illusions” for the coming year.  
  • Afternoon: The Illusion Parade
As the afternoon begins, the Illusion Parade takes center stage. Enormous magical constructs float through the streets—phantasmal dragons, ethereal spirits, and illusions of forgotten heroes. The parade is a collaboration between Changelings and visiting illusionists from across Astrium, who conjure grand displays that blur the lines between reality and magic. The entire city watches in awe as illusions dance, clash, and weave around them.  
  • Evening: The Masquerade of Masks
As the sun sets, the Masquerade of Masks commences. Citizens and visitors don enchanted masks that hide their true forms, adding to the mystery and magic of the night. No one appears as they are, and the event is filled with intrigue as attendees try to guess who they are interacting with. Music, dancing, and performances fill the night, and the city becomes a playground for mystery and artistry.  
  • Finale: The Shifting Light Ceremony
The festival culminates in the Shifting Light Ceremony at midnight, where the sky above Illusaris fills with swirling illusions of stars, planets, and cosmic forms. These illusions seem to blend into reality, creating a breathtaking celestial display. The ceremony is a moment of reflection, where the Changelings celebrate their adaptability and boundless potential, honoring the spirit of Illusaris.   The Grand Festival of Illusions is a single, magical day that transforms the city of Illusaris into a dreamlike realm, leaving visitors and citizens alike inspired by the possibilities of magic, art, and the Changeling spirit.

Illusaris' architecture is fluid and illusionary, with buildings that change shape and appearance based on the whims of their inhabitants. Towers, spires, and grand halls may appear one way in the morning and completely different by the evening. The illusion magic woven into the stone and wood creates a sense of impermanence, and visitors often find it difficult to grasp the true form of the city.
