Eclipsion
Once known as Leviathan, a floating pirate city formed by hundreds of ships lashed together, Eclipsion has transformed into a mysterious settlement shrouded within the mist-laden Vapour Valley. Hidden by the vaporous shields created by the Shardminds and Genasi, Eclipsion is a city of secrets and shadows, where sailors, pirates, and the Shardmind people coexist. It serves as a hidden port for the adventurous, a haven for pirates, and a nesting ground for the Shardminds, who have made the conglomeration of ships their home.
Demographics
Estimated at around 40,000 inhabitants, though numbers fluctuate due to transient sailors and adventurers passing through.
A mix of Humanoids (Humans, Half-elves, Tieflings, Goliaths), Shardminds, and Genasi.
Humanoids: 50%
Shardminds: 30%
Genasi: 15%
Other Races: 5% (Includes various sea-faring races like Tritons, Tabaxi, Tortles, etc.)
Government
Eclipsion operates under a loose confederation known as the Mists, which consists of representatives from major pirate factions, Shardmind leaders, and Genasi chieftains. Decisions are made collectively, and the city’s governance prioritizes secrecy, defense, and maintaining balance between its different populations. Pirate Lords still wield significant influence over the city's trade and external relations.
Defences
Natural Defenses: The Vapour Valley itself acts as the first line of defense. The thick mist makes it nearly impossible for outsiders to locate or navigate the city without special compasses.
Mistcallers: A force of Genasi mist-weavers who manipulate the mists to create illusions, confuse intruders, or shield the city from detection. They are also capable of summoning deadly fogs that drain life from enemies.
Shardmind Guardians: Crystalline warriors who protect the Shardnests and key locations in Eclipsion. They are formidable combatants with the ability to warp their crystalline bodies into various forms of weapons and armor.
Industry & Trade
Eclipsion's main trade revolves around smuggling, piracy, and the crafting of enchanted ship parts and goods. The city serves as a haven for smugglers and merchants dealing in rare or illegal goods. The Genasi and Shardminds also trade in magical artifacts and elemental-infused items.
Shipbuilding: Leviathan's legacy as a pirate city means that shipbuilding and repair are major industries. The city's docks are constantly bustling with activity, as pirates repair or upgrade their vessels.
Arcane Research: The Shardminds are heavily invested in arcane research, especially in using the mists to fuel new magical technologies and defenses.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure of Eclipsion is a labyrinthine network of old ship decks, masts, and hulls restructured to form streets, districts, and towering platforms. The city sprawls upward as well as outward, with ship masts being repurposed into watchtowers and walkways. The Vapour Valley ensures that the city is perpetually hidden by thick mists, giving the entire settlement an eerie, cloaked atmosphere. Navigating Eclipsion requires both a good memory and a knack for reading the subtle shifts in mist that signal hidden paths.
Districts
The Keel District: The heart of the city, made from the largest ships, where the Council of Mists meets and where pirate leaders and merchants operate. The city's best shipbuilders and repair yards are also found here.
The Shardnests: A district entirely controlled by the Shardminds, where they carve out their crystalline nests within the wreckage of ships. These structures pulse with arcane energy and serve as both homes and arcane laboratories.
Leviathan Row: A rowdy district filled with taverns, gambling dens, and markets. It’s the hub of trade, where smuggled goods, rare artifacts, and pirate spoils are bought and sold.
Mistspire Heights: A district built into the masts of the tallest ships, where the Genasi have established their enclave. Their homes are woven with elemental magic, blending wood, stone, and mist. Some of the best navigators and airship crafters reside here.
Assets
Blacksmith: Rusthammer Forge – Specializes in weapons and armor forged from both conventional materials and magically reinforced ship parts. The smithy also offers elemental-infused weaponry for Genasi and Shardminds.
Tailor: Mistsilk Weavers – Produces enchanted clothing and sails, woven with rare mist-infused fabrics that shimmer and shift. Clothing made here offers minor enchantments such as protection against elements or improved stealth in misty environments.
General Store: The Sea Chest – Sells basic supplies like ropes, ship parts, rations, and maps of sea and mist-shrouded trade routes. They also specialize in enchanted compasses to navigate the ever-shifting vapors.
Magic Item Vendor: Whispers in the Fog – A shop run by a mysterious Shardmind merchant who offers rare magical trinkets and relics salvaged from wrecks at sea. Many items come with both blessings and curses.
Guilds and Factions
The Leviathan Fleet: A powerful pirate faction that maintains control of sea trade and smuggling routes, as well as the city's remaining seaworthy ships.
The Mistcallers: A faction of Genasi mist-weavers who control the city’s natural defenses and are responsible for hiding the city in the Vapour Valley.
Shardmind Collective: A faction of Shardmind scholars and researchers, focused on unlocking the mysteries of the Vapour Valley and creating new arcane technologies.
Points of interest
The Cradle of Leviathan: The oldest part of the city, formed by the original pirate ships that made up the floating city of Leviathan. This is where the Council of Mists meets and where the most powerful pirate lords hold court.
The Shardnests: The home district of the Shardminds, where vibrant crystalline growths pulse with arcane energy. The area is known for its strange beauty and is a hub for magical research.
Fogbound Docks: The city’s harbor, hidden within the mists of the Vapour Valley. Here, smugglers and pirates dock their ships, and repairs and upgrades are made to vessels using enchanted ship parts.
Tourism
Eclipsion is not a tourist city in the traditional sense, but it attracts adventurers and fortune-seekers eager to uncover the treasures hidden within its misty streets. Leviathan Row is a popular destination for those looking for excitement, while the Shardnests draw scholars and mages interested in arcane study.
Celebration
Leviathan’s Veil - 14th Umbravor
A one-day celebration in the city of Eclipsion, commemorating the day when the pirate city of Leviathan was moved from the open seas into the Vapour Valley and hidden away from the world. The holiday is both a celebration of Eclipsion’s history and a reminder of its continued secrecy and unity. It takes place annually on the Day of the Deep Fog, when the valley's mists are thickest, and the city is almost completely obscured, even from its own inhabitants.
Festivities:
The Mistwalk Procession: At dawn, the holiday begins with a Mistwalk Procession through the streets of Eclipsion. Locals don cloaks made of mistweave fabric that shimmers and shifts like the fog itself. The procession is led by Mistcallers (Genasi mist-weavers), who create swirling fog patterns and illusions, making the city feel like it is moving through layers of fog. The procession is said to honor both the Vapour Valley and the pirates of old, representing their journey into the unknown.
The Calling of the Leviathan: At noon, the city enacts the Calling of the Leviathan, a dramatic reenactment of the original pirate city's voyage into the Vapour Valley. Shardminds and Genasi perform magical rituals to summon a colossal illusion of a ghostly pirate ship, symbolizing the Leviathan, that sails through the city. The illusion is accompanied by music, cheers, and cannon fire (blanks), giving the sense of an epic journey.
The Veil Duel: In the afternoon, a competitive event known as the Veil Duel is held in the Leviathan Row district. Pirates and adventurers challenge each other in combat or ship duels within the fog. The mists are manipulated to obscure the fighters' vision, making the duels unpredictable and exciting. The winner is crowned the Mistborn Captain for the day, an honorary title that comes with a special feast and a temporary seat in the Council of Mists.
Whispers in the Fog: As night falls, the city dims all lights, and Eclipsion falls into a state of eerie quiet for an hour known as Whispers in the Fog. During this time, Shardminds and mystics perform meditations, and locals share stories of their ancestors or adventures at sea. It is believed that the spirits of the original pirate lords and fallen sailors return to whisper their wisdom in the ears of those who listen carefully.
Traditions:
Fog Offerings: Families and ship crews prepare small offerings—usually coins, pieces of shipwood, or enchanted trinkets—that are tossed into the mist during the procession. This is done to honor the past and ensure safe journeys in the future.
Pirate Games: Throughout the day, the streets of Leviathan Row are filled with pirate-themed games like treasure hunts, fog-sculpture contests, and card games. Prizes often include relics or enchanted items recovered from long-lost shipwrecks.
Food and Drink:
Leviathan’s Feast: A grand feast is held in the evening at the Cradle of Leviathan, where massive tables are set out with seafood dishes, rum, and exotic fruits brought in from pirate raids. Special dishes like Mist-baked Eel and Fog-brewed Rum are served, which are cooked using mists to enhance their flavor.
Fogwater Ale: A special ale brewed with enchanted water drawn from the mists of Vapour Valley, which gives the drink a silvery, fog-like appearance. It’s served in all taverns throughout the day, and it is said to bring clarity in visions and dreams.
Significance:
"Leviathan’s Veil" celebrates not just the historical migration of the pirate city, but also the unique blend of cultures—pirates, Shardminds, and Genasi—that make up Eclipsion. The holiday serves as a reminder of the city's deep ties to both the seas and the mists, and the balance between secrecy and freedom that defines Eclipsion’s existence.
Architecture
The architecture of Eclipsion is a haphazard fusion of pirate shipwrecks and arcane construction. Many buildings are modified ship decks, with towering masts functioning as both support beams and lookout points. The Shardmind influence is seen in crystalline structures that grow from the wreckage like vibrant coral, while the Genasi have infused their homes with elemental magic, creating flowing, mist-like forms that shimmer in the misty air.
Natural Resources
The city has access to the mists of Vapour Valley, which contain powerful arcane energy that can be harnessed for magical crafting. They also rely on trade and piracy to bring in supplies, as the valley itself offers little in terms of traditional natural resources.
