Dwarf - Duegar

Gray Dwarves, Deep Dwarves, Shadowsmiths, Dwarves of the Underdark

Basic Information

Anatomy

Duergar possess a more pallid and gaunt appearance compared to other dwarves, an adaptation to the darkness of the Underdark. They have an ashen complexion, often appearing gray or muted in tone, with white or silver hair. Their eyes are sensitive to light and tend to be shades of dull red or pale gray, granting them an unsettling gaze. They have slightly elongated fingers and tougher skin, which appears almost stone-like due to exposure to the psionic energies and mineral-rich environment of their subterranean world.

Genetics and Reproduction

Duergar reproduce similarly to other dwarves, with a similarly long lifespan and relatively low birth rates. However, their extended exposure to aberrant magic and psionic energy has led to some genetic changes, which manifest as innate psionic abilities. These traits are heritable, passed down through generations, which makes them uniquely adapted to survival in the hostile environments of the Underdark.

Ecology and Habitats

Duergar thrive in the Underdark’s dark, oppressive environment, preferring deep caverns and shadowed halls far beneath the surface. Their settlements are typically built within vast subterranean cities, fortified with defensive structures to protect against hostile creatures of the Underdark. Due to the scarcity of resources in these depths, Duergar are highly resourceful, relying on fungus farming, aquifer fishing, and mineral harvesting. They interact with their harsh habitat through mining and psionic manipulation, bending their environment to their will.

Behaviour

Duergar are known for their stoic, grim demeanor and are often distrustful of outsiders due to their history of enslavement and isolation. They have a reputation for being calculating, pragmatic, and fiercely loyal to their kin. While Duergar share the dwarven sense of clan loyalty, they are more insular and have a strict hierarchy in their society. Many Duergar struggle with feelings of paranoia and isolation, which their society often reinforces as necessary traits for survival in the Underdark.

Average Intelligence

High, particularly in psionics and craftsmanship

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Having lived in the deep darkness of the Underdark, Duergar possess exceptionally developed darkvision, allowing them to see in the pitch black up to 120 feet. They discern shapes and objects with ease, though only in shades of gray. Generations of exposure to psionic forces have also granted them limited psionic abilities, including the power to enlarge themselves and become invisible, which they often use strategically in battle.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Duergar names are often harsh-sounding and short, reflecting their concise, no-nonsense approach to life. Names like Vorgath, Karkun, and Ylda are common. Surnames are usually descriptive, referring to clan roles or achievements, such as Shadowforge, Stoneblood, or Ironvein.

Beauty Ideals

In Duergar society, beauty is defined by resilience and utility. Physical scars, marks of labor, and visible psionic tattoos are admired as signs of strength and discipline. Both men and women often braid their hair, though their braids are tighter and more utilitarian than other dwarves’, sometimes woven with metallic threads or psionic-infused minerals.

Gender Ideals

Duergar society is largely egalitarian, with no strong gender-based roles. Both men and women are expected to contribute to their clan's survival and prosperity. Strength, loyalty, and psionic aptitude are valued above all, and gender has little bearing on social or familial roles.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship among Duergar is a private and practical affair, often involving an exchange of crafted items or resources rather than traditional romance. Gifts of finely crafted tools or enchanted stones are considered appropriate tokens of affection. Relationships are formed more out of mutual respect and survival partnership than passionate romance.

Relationship Ideals

Duergar marriages are based on loyalty, mutual support, and a commitment to clan preservation. Partnership is seen as a strategic alliance that strengthens the family unit and contributes to the community. Duergar do not display affection openly and value relationships that allow both partners to focus on their roles within the clan.

Common Etiquette Rules

Duergar are formal and reserved in their interactions. It is customary to greet one another with a nod rather than physical contact. Silence is respected in Duergar society, and open displays of emotion are discouraged. When speaking, one must always show respect for the rank and skills of the other party.

Common Dress Code

Duergar wear muted, functional clothing suited to the darkness and hazards of the Underdark. Shades of gray, black, and dark blue are common. Their clothing often includes armor plating, durable leather, and psionically-enchanted stones woven into their attire. Head coverings and hoods are common to shield their sensitive eyes from light.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

The Duergar take pride in their survival against mind flayers and other horrors of the Underdark. They celebrate their resilience and the psionic powers that allow them to defend themselves. Their history is often recorded through psionic imprints left in stones, which only Duergar can read. They take immense pride in their craftsmanship, creating intricate, durable works of art hidden within their subterranean strongholds.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Psionic Awakening: A coming-of-age ceremony where young Duergar demonstrate their psionic abilities before the clan. Day of Shadows: An annual gathering where Duergar honor their ancestors who perished under mind flayer rule, a solemn day of reflection and remembrance. Stone Communion: A ritual where Duergar gather to meditate and channel their collective psionic energy into the earth, fortifying their settlements and gaining insight from ancestral memories embedded in the stones.

Common Taboos

Collaboration with Aberrations: Any dealings with aberrations such as mind flayers or other psionic creatures are forbidden and punishable by exile. Excessive Display of Emotion: In Duergar society, displays of intense emotion are seen as a weakness and disrespectful to their stoic ancestors.

History

Duergar were once part of the broader dwarven society before their ancestors delved too deep into the Underdark in search of riches and power. There, they were captured by mind flayers and subjected to psionic experiments that forever altered their lineage. After centuries of enslavement, they eventually freed themselves and forged a society in the Underdark. They have a longstanding enmity with the mind flayers and other aberrant creatures. Recently, the Duergar have also begun re-establishing Kaspax with the Deep Gnomes, seeing the strategic and economic value in the long-abandoned city.

Common Myths and Legends

Duergar lore tells of The Great Escape, a story recounting the ancestors’ revolt against their mind flayer captors. Another myth is The Heartstone, a legendary psionic gem rumored to have immense powers, said to be hidden somewhere in the Underdark and believed to grant its bearer unparalleled psionic abilities. Another tale speaks of Vornax the Stone Keeper, a Duergar warrior who sacrificed himself to seal away an ancient terror within the depths of the Underdark, an act still commemorated by psionic chants among his descendants.
