Dearg Mountains
Geography
The Dearg Mountains are a mountain range located in the northeast part of Arrijion. They act as a barrier between the flatlands of central Arrijion and the far-colder northern part of the continent.
The numerous peaks are intermixed with deep valleys and bowls which function as places to settle. Some valleys contain lakes, maintained by the occasional monsoon and the snowmelt.
Their most iconic feature is their bright red color, which gives them their name. The red color carries over to the soil, which is surprisingly fertile and can be farmed at low enough altitudes. The crops grown there, however, takes on a red tint as well.
Fauna & Flora
The forests that line the mountainsides have also taken on the red color of the soil. They cover the slopes at lower altitudes, and tough shrubs and short plants persist at higher ones. The are has been heavily de-forested in recent years due to the lack of wood imports from other regions.
The animals in the mountains have also come to take on a reddish color, the herbivores having the deepest tint due to their direct consumption of the flora. Even the people of the mountains have taken on the color in the form of their bright red hair.
Squirrels, mice, and other small mammals plus various types of birds make up the smaller wildlife. Deer and goats make up the larger herbivores. Wildcats and coyotes make up the majority of the carnivores (in addition to several birds of prey), with the occasional bear and scavenger filling out the rest of the fauna.
Natural Resources
The mountains are rich in various minerals and metals including gold, the incredibly-valuable dia-steel, and coal. What little farmable land exists is incredibly fertile and provides an incredible amount of food for the area. The redwood is also considered valuable to other regions and many wood homes in the region are built from it, though the majority of the building is done with imported wood as the redwood is too hard for efficient construction.
