Dragons

Dragons, oh, dragons. With many variations to the species, it’s hard to put dragons in a box; it would be like trying to group together every breed of dog. However, there are a fair amount of things that stay the same across the species: dragons have bat-like, leathery wings strong enough to carry the rest of their body weight for great distances, at great speeds. They all have four legs, often adorned with claws, and often have tails long enough to curl around themselves (and their hoard, depending on the size of it, of course). They are distinctly reptilian, with tough (read: nearly indestructible, even with the right materials) scales, slit noses, sideways eyelids, large and pointed teeth, and jaws sometimes capable of unhinging to an alarming degree to make way for spouts of fire. Every single part of the dragon is fireproof, for obvious reasons; dragonhide armor is incredibly expensive for this reason. However, Fairlight  strongly prohibits the hunting of dragons for their hides, finding the practice distasteful and downright disturbing. On the off chance a dragon finds itself a home in Ironbrook , however, it’s fair game… to whichever fool believes he can kill a dragon. Dragons aren’t inherently malicious, though, despite the mythos of Ironbrook suggesting otherwise; in fact, in Fairlight , they’re treasured, and even kept as pets in some cases (granted you have the proper permits and training). Domesticated dragons are usually smaller than the 60ft variety unless you’re extremely rich and have a lot of space, but just as effective as any other kind of dragon. Rising in popularity these days are the ever-adorable “pocket dragons” - dragons that can drape themselves across your shoulders like a scarf or even literally fit into your pocket. Dragons can be very temperamental depending on their external influences - dragons out in the wild usually mind their own business, sleeping for long periods in caves or crevasses (really just any space big enough to hold themselves and their hoard) until disturbed, or until it’s around time to find a mate. However, pet dragons face a lot more direct stimuli, and thus, can get a bit cranky or moody, unless trained well. Even so, it’s mostly preferred that your dragon stays at home, or close to you in controlled environments. Dragons are not allowed in libraries. Neither are they allowed in jewelry shops, for obvious reasons - dragons enjoy riches of almost any kind, their favorites being gold and precious stones. They feel most comfortable when surrounded by these precious materials, and if you’re going to have a dragon as a pet, it’s a wise choice to either keep your shiny heirlooms locked away, or sacrifice them to your beloved pet’s hoarding pile.
