Demons
simply put, voids of energy to most other living things. There's more to them than that admittedly inadequate explanation, of course, and demonic forces are far more complex and difficult to describe, but the nature of demons is nigh unreachable to most mortal creatures; and that is entirely intentional. Demons are malevolent and secretive in nature; they are not to be trifled with, but they will not inform you of such - in fact, they will most likely try to draw you in with promises of your greatest heart's desires; they are difficult to resist. While demons may appear more human at times, even those unfamiliar with magic or auras will be able to detect one near them - the feeling of a demon approaching is comparable to having your head forced underwater; senses may become muddled, your chest may become tight, your entire body might tense, and the second you see said demon, you may feel a pit in your stomach or a chill down your spine. Despite these terrifying effects a demonic entity may have on you, though, you will be more enticed to approach them than you might think. A demon's innate ability to sniff out weakness should never be underestimated; even the most powerful of mages may have their defenses broken by a lesser demon; the power of greater demons can be even more devastating. Demons come in many shapes, and frequently shift between forms to avoid detection while keeping a hold on whatever poor souls they've decided to latch onto; they might appear as simple shadows, or as great, dark birds, or even as people. Even as children. Demons are one of the only life forms able to grant magical abilities to the less magically inclined; however, this, obviously, comes at a price. Should you make a deal with a demon, you will bind your soul to theirs, drawing from their power when you need it… Just as they can draw everything from you. Lesser demons are formidable, though are usually only considered worse because they can reproduce with other, more corporeal life forms, creating demonic halfling children to carry out their deeds; greater demons, while being less corporeal, are far more powerful, and no one who lays eyes on one of these beings will ever forget that.
